“Wicked.” “Crazy.” “Extremist.” Those are the words Americans United For Separation of Church and State uses in reference to the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.
But the organization, which claims to fight to “ensure religious freedom for all Americans,” is not using those words to describe Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old who shot and killed 27 innocent souls.
No, its reproach is directed at the “religious right,” including such figures as Mike Huckabee and William J. Murray, for daring to suggest that the eviction of God from the nation’s public schools just might have contributed to the rise of school-related violence and mayhem over the past half-century.
“We ask,” said Huckabee, former Arkansas governor, “why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?”
Huckabee was echoed by Murray, who heads the Religious Freedom Coalition (which, unlike Americans United for Separation of Church and State, actually does fight for religious freedom).
“In the vast majority of America’s public schools,” he said, “the authority of God has been replaced with the authority of the iron fist of government. Morals? Without the authority of God, there are no morals, and none are taught in the public schools today. The ethics that are taught are situational, perhaps the same situational ethics that led to the logic that caused the tragic shootings in Newtown.”
Americans United For Separation of Church and State declared “deplorable” the views of Huckabee and Murray (and others who share their conservative Christian thinking, including yours truly). But there is prima facie evidence to support the statements by the two religious right figures.
Indeed, in his 2000 book, “Restoring America’s Christian Education,” Providence Foundation President Stephen McDowell noted: “In 1940, the top offenses by students included chewing gum, talking in class, unfinished homework, and running in the halls.” By 1980, he continued, “the top offenses were drugs, drunkenness, assault, rape, and murder.”
Things changed in the early 1960s, when the U.S. Supreme Court issued two landmark decisions, Engel v. Vitale and Abington School District v. Schempp, that banned prayer in schools. That was followed by early 1970s Supreme Court decision, Lemon v. Kurtzman, which declared that any practice allowed by public schools must have a strictly secular purpose.
Then there was the early 1990s decision by the High Court in Lee v. Weisman and early 200s decision in Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe, that outlawed prayer at public school graduation ceremonies and before high school football games, respectively.
Those court decisions ignored the fact that America’s first public schools were founded by Christians. And that some five generations of school children learned to read and write using a spelling book, a grammar and a reader published by Noah Webster, a devout Christian, who is perhaps best known for the dictionary that bears his name.
“The central goal of education,” said Webster, is “to train youth in the precepts of Christianity.” He added, “Only people of good character and ideals can preserve religious and civil liberty. It was this very kind of people that gave birth to freedom throughout the world.”
Webster was right. And it’s because America has strayed so far from his thinking that the nation’s public schools have become the devil’s playground.
The “religious right” weren’t the ones who were out 10 seconds after the massacre getting all the news wrong and demanding gun control.
If we compare the massacre to abortion then so be it. There is a huge level of hypocrisy on the part of the LEFT to be revealed here.

Then the church lost the war on same-sex marriage by not strongly denouncing easy access to divorce. Tie in the tepid response to Roe v. Wade, and you have the situation we have now.
agreed the bra burnings, thenthe get rid of sodomy laws, then get homosexuality is not a mental disease, then tell women they need woman power , don;t need a guy, a kid does not need a father, promote divorce. It’s not a coincidence they started this and now we have these problems today. We have so many in the last 2 generations which think the world owes them, thinks they should everything, they think they should not work and not be told to do anything. The left brought all of this on. Why not promote marriage between one man and one woman, have that father to guide boys to be real men, to be a good father, to be a good son. Why not admit marriage is hard as is raising children but we give some of our lives up for this. My wife worked as a nanny years ago up in Boston and saw how those so called parents never raised their kids but they thought buying their kids everything was being a good parent. One woman she worked for was awful, all about womens lib, pro homo, anti Bush etc She even tried to tell her to get a divorce to which my wife said piss off and left. This woman got two kids from Russia, , my wife got the kids ready for school, cleaned her house, did her laundry and dirty panties YUCK, got the kids from school, did their homework with them, got them ready for bed. When the woman came home who had plenty of money and lived her food and wine, she would say right away to my wife. “Have you done the kids homework and given their dinner?” My wife would reply yes to which the women would tell the kids to go and watch TV and then got a bottle of wine. Over two years these two nice Russian kids turned into brats, really bad brats, thought they were above everyone The woman on a Friday would leave a check for my wife but she could only receive the check her wages off the boy. The boy would hit here, tell her she did not work hard enough etc. The woman did nothing for discipline but pay the kids to be quiet etc. My wife got kicked, hit, told to F-off as these kids got older. Later the woman would bring round her homosexual pals at the weekend and let the kids play camp out in the front room with them etc. The woman was a staunch liberal, liberal as they come, brought up in Cambridge MA. She was a failure and last my wife heard was that the kid had been hitting teachers. not once was this woman ever there for these kids when she got them as babies. Sadly this is all over. I’;ve heard Alison Camareta off FOX say she gives her kid Benadryl on plane rides, the woman my wife worked for would pay the kids, Gretchen Carlson said last week after interviewing an actor over a movie that she now knows what to do with her kids on Christmas afternoon. Seriously she gets a day off and has no idea until then what to do with her kids . How about opening presents, teachings kids what Christmas is about, playing with her kids, cooking dinner, having her daughter help her, cleaning up after thus showing the kids what work is. No manners, morals, respect is taught off many parents today and that goes certainly for those on the media and they know it and that is why they will not mention parenting problems today.

....agree, although it probably started earlier. We’ve had generations of adults that did not see the wisdom of (their) current reality and felt it was acceptable to allow moral boundaries to move. When the culture shifted on divorce, gay marriage was inevitable. In a sense, I wonder about how women had to be integrated into the workforce during WWII, if that laid the foundation for many of these changes (or was a catalyst at least)?
You can almost see the writing on the wall: pop culture + Islam + multicuturalism + “mans wisdom” etc. - volatile mixture. Only a massive “event” would change our thinking...seems inevitable too. I highly doubt that our scientific culture will truly ever be applied to human nature and the messages of different religions, man always allows lust and desire to interfere in our judgement/analysis. If an honest analysis were to be done, the conclusion could only be that we need to collectively recognize the truth in Christ and *choose* to live that way. With our technology we can mitigate some of the consequences of poor moral choices, so we arrogantly discard those moral principles like spoiled children. Society as a whole seems to be behaving like an adolescent with a toy it shouldn’t have, we need to grow up in God’s eyes. Imagine the world we’d have if we would choose to live by Christ and have the benefits of technological knowledge. We certainly wouldn’t need big government, that’s only needed when people replace God with men.
