I also so the 2-D version last weekend, with the homeschool association. My husband took our teenagers yesterday; they saw the 3-D, just because of the scheduling. We all enjoyed it, although those of us who have been studying the book since June had a number of “That’s not in the text!” moments.

Mercifully those times were few, according to my husband. The LOTR films I endured quite a number of “didn’t happen!” during them lol
There were some things taken from the appendices apparently, in an attempt to tie it all together.
