The Episcopal Church: Nothing Like Consistency

The very first newspaper op-ed article I ever published, way back in 1984, was about All Saints Episcopal Church in Pasadena, California, which has long had a reputation as a leading “progressive” parish. I wrote about attending a meeting where a group of parishioners were reporting back on a recent visit to the newest workers’ paradise, Nic . . .—now just wait for it!!—yes, indeed, it was Nicaragua (or “KNEE-car-AHHH-gua,” if you’re really au courant). Since this article was published in the pre-Internet age, I can’t link to it, so here’s the lede from my hard-copy archive:

The article itself is interesting ... in a nauseating sort of way. But the bonus "comedy" video, which, sadly, is NOT a parody, is the draw.

Yup. That was my reaction when I saw it. Ironically, the video, made possible by an Episcopal parish, is trying to push women’s ordination in the Catholic Church. The ECUSA today is all about propagating social justice from a particular point of view and nothing else. This is its gospel. This is its “great commission.” It is trying to “convert” the rest of Christendom to its vision of truth. As it does so, it is entirely driven by a this-worldly view of humanity. It just sprinkles in some God words to give some little religious flavor to the whole concoction.

The blame, in my view, does not fall only on the bishops and priests, but also on the laity in the pews who tolerate and financially support such nonsense.

ECUSA is a politico-religious club with really beautiful trappings supplied by its Christian past.

good post, Beltie -- as you said the video, made possible by an Episcopal parish, is trying to push women’s ordination in the Catholic Church. -- what I don't get with these folks and the "gay marriage" folks is: if they want a group that accepts what they want, they have the ECUSA, why not leave the rest of us alone?

If there is a Catholic or a Lutheran who prizes priestesses or "gay marriage" over Christian doctrine, or who think it so important to "change the church", then why can't they go to the ECUSA which accepts all of this?

For far too long us non-Anglicans have just said "it's the Episcopalians problem" -- but it's not just their problem, it's a Christian problem

we are fools if we think that this will not affect each and every one of us.
