Prefect Warns Against Making Liturgy Into a 'Show'

The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments is preparing a booklet to help priests celebrate the Mass properly and the faithful to participate better, according to the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments.

Cardinal Antonio Cañizares confirmed this Tuesday at an address at the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See on "Catholic Liturgy since Vatican II: Continuity and Evolution."

"We are preparing it; it will help to celebrate well and to participate well. I hope it will come out this year, in the summer," the cardinal told ZENIT.

During his talk the cardinal reiterated the importance Vatican II gave to the liturgy, "whose renewal must be understood in continuity with the Tradition of the Church and not as a break or discontinuity." A break either because of innovations that do not respect continuity or because of an immobility that freezes everything at Pius XII, he said.

In particular, Cardinal Cañizares stressed the importance that Sacrosanctum Concilium gave to the sacred liturgy, through which "the work of our Redemption is exercised, above all in the divine sacrifice of the Eucharist," adding that "God wants to be adored in a concrete way and it's not up to us to change it."

The cardinal said that there is talk of a renewed Church, which must not be understood as a mere reform of structures, but as a change starting with the liturgy, because it is from the liturgy that the work of our salvation is effected.

When speaking of the liturgy, continued the cardinal, one must not forget what the conciliar document states: "Christ is always present in his Church, especially in the liturgical action. He is present in the sacrifice of the Mass, be it in the person of the minister....

And of course, the Cardinals have an absolute and total exclusive on what that way is. Give me a break!

In the 70s Fr. Perkovich in Eveleth Mn used to give Polka Masses. Very popular. They might still be going on for all I know.

In the 70’s I remember a Mass where a number of women performed a “liturgical dance”. It was.....to say the least.....ummm......interesting.

From what I see participation at Mass is absolutely plummeting since they re-translated the Missal into incomprehensible arcane language. Many of the wounds are self-inflicted I feel.

If you want to make it up as you go along, please don't call yourself "Catholic" when you do it.

Oh, wait ...

You're openly protestant. (IIRC).

So ... that makes you at least intellectually honest ... unlike the malfeasant-in-office folks whose misbehaviour prompted the Cardinal to write the subject document.

I'd call that absolute, unmitigated, purified, weapons-grade nonsense ... but that would be an insult to absolute, unmitigated, purified, weapons-grade nonsense.

In terms of public worship, the Church is emphatic that Cardinals not only do not have an exclusive, they have no more authority on most things than the average person in the pew. The liturgy is the public worship of the Church, and it is the duty of the ministers, be they Cardinals or simple priests, to do what the Church says is to be done when performing a particular liturgical acts (like saying Mass). Those who depart from what is given through the Church are by their actions claiming an authority to act for the body in a public way that they do not possess.

There's nothing "incomprehensible" or "arcane" about the new translation. A recent survey showed that most Catholics are quite pleased with it. It's regained much of the reverence that was there initially until liberalism and misinterpretation of Vatican II watered it down during the 70's.

You're right.

Bugnini was only an Archbishop when he concocted the Novus Ordo.

The Cardinal was just announcing the work done by the Congregation (a committee) and not coming up with his own take on things!

In any case, I hope this does something to stop some of the more bizarre abuses. They’re usually fairly sane in my parish, but there are others where the priest virtually ad libs the entire mass, tells jokes or inserts his own personal observations in the liturgical parts, or forces the congregation to come up and say the consecration with him.

Now if only the bishops will really enforce these guidelines...

If you want to see a true plummeting in Mass attendance look at the drop from 80-90% Mass attendance with the old Mass before Vatican II to the 20% Mass attendance with the new Mass after Vatican II. Catholic worship has gone off the rails and we need to get it back.

Yada Yada Yada!

With that being said, I usually drive to another local parish instead of my closest parish, just to find a Novus Ordo Mass that I can live with and not be annoyed with. Which is pretty much the lot of all right thinking and knowing Catholics.

There is a fine Latin Mass community not far from here. I know Priests who say Mass there and many who enjoy attending.

For the other 3/4 of us who grew up after Vatican II and don’t speak a lick of Latin, this is not the wave of the future.

‘...not the wave of the future’

I grew up with the latin mass, Catholic school, born 1957, and I have attended a few more recently, but I shudder at the thought. Dont want to learn it, dont want to sit in mass longer, dont want to for all kinds of reasons!

Just want a novus ordo in good form.
If the pope decrees a hybrid mass containing both latin
and local language, hybridizing both Novus Ordo and Latin forms, as a replacement to the Novus Ordo and there is talk! That would probably be best.

Good day

I’m so sick of people criticizing VII and think they know better than the Church. The Holy Spirit can’t deceive nor be deceived.

Same here.

All my life, since I was born in 1959, I had known ONLY of the NO type of mass, being in the shadow of VCII. I only want the NO done right.
