Uh....could it be because they are good examples in sports and the Church is actually sincere in what it is trying to achieve with no ulterior motive or hidden agenda??Why the surprise?
The hypocrisy of your church.
Your church goes to great length to denigrate Born Again Christians and yet when your church wants to elevate the examples of good Christians in sports they pick out Born Again Christians as good symbols.

The Catholic Church embraces what is good in every circumstance, irrespective of its origin. It will also continue to insist that it preaches the fullness of the Gospel Truth but that is in no way synonymous with "denigrating" non-Catholics.
Here's a thought. Maybe you've actually misjudged us........
