Mary Gundrum, 20 weeks pregnant, was excited when an ultrasound revealed that she was going to have a baby boy. Then she looked closer and said, “What’s that in front of his face?”

“That,” the doctor replied somberly, “is a problem.”

The news was grim. The fetus had an encephalocele, a rare disorder in which part of the brain was exposed, covered in skin, outside the head. In this case, the brain was growing down into the roof of the mouth and protruding onto the face.

The Gundrums are an amazing family who truly live the idea of being pro-life. They truly believe that their little boy, Dominic is a blessing, as are their seven other children.

Here’s a link to the family’s blog. I wish I could really give people an understanding about how wonderful this story is.

Ah, man, God bless them and their journey. Very brave, very compassionate. Love abounds. You’ve made my day. Prayers for them and their wonderful son.

I had the chance to meet them today and I feel better for it.

It has changed my view of the pro-life movement and my personal view of abortion. I have been pro-life for many years, but it really made the issue a personal one for me.

I have a small birth defect that doesn’t affect my quality of life, but spending time with them made me realize that I could have been killed because I wasn’t perfect.

It changed me. I pray for their family, I pray for Dominic and I pray for those who don’t understand the impact even the idea of abortion can have on the disabled.

Thank you for sharing this story. May God bless that family, their surgical team, and the families that have supported them through this.
