From the bishop’s letter (http://catholickey.org/2013/01/25/the-bishops-role-in-fostering-the-mission-of-the-catholic-media/):
‘Bishop Charles Helmsing in October of 1968 issued a condemnation of the National Catholic Reporter and asked the publishers to remove the name Catholic from their title to no avail. [...] I find that my ability to influence the National Catholic Reporter toward fidelity to the Church seems limited to the supernatural level.’
The reality is that any group can call themselves “Catholic” eg Episcopalians, Catholics for Free Choice, gay groups , National Catholic Reporter etc. These groups have no affiliation with the Roman Catholic Church and their pronouncements and positions mostly do not reflect Church teaching and are not sanctioned by the Church. The National “Catholic” Reporter is supported by an independent foundation. The Bishops should of course make it clear that this entity has no connection to the Roman Catholic Church.
