As I understand it, the doctrine originally was for burial in a casket — we see that in the Bible — I’m thinking of the story of the Widow of Nain.

Along the way, I’m not quite sure when, though, cremation was approved for funerals.

There is one very big BUT here — the ashes MUST be buried. Many Catholic cemeteries are opening up additional sites for urns. For example, my husband’s plot is in a Catholic Cemetery with a plot for me right beside it. If our children chose to be cremated, then their ashes could also be buried in those two spots.
