Daily Gospel Commentary

Monday of the First week of Lent
Commentary of the day
A sermon attributed to Saint Hippolytus of Rome (?-c.235), priest and martyr
Treatise on the end of the world, 41-43 ; GCS I, 2, 305-307

"Come, you who are blessed by my Father"

“Come, you are blessed by my Father, receive the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. Come, you who have shown love to the poor, to strangers. Come, you who have remained faithful to my love since I am love. Come, you who have chosen peace since I am peace. Come, blessed by my Father, receive the Kingdom as your inheritance, the Kingdom prepared for you.

You have not esteemed wealth but given alms to the poor. You have succored orphans, supported widows, given drink to the thirsty and food to the hungry. You have welcomed strangers, clothed the naked, visited the sick, comforted prisoners and come to the aid of the blind. You have kept intact the seal of faith and have been prompt to come together in the churches. You have listened to Scripture and greatly longed to hear my words. You have kept my law day and night (Ps 1,2) and shared my sufferings like brave soldiers that you might find grace in my sight, your heavenly king. Come, receive the Kingdom as your heritage, the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. See my Kingdom made ready and my heaven open. See my immortality appear in all its beauty. Let all of you come, receive as your heritage the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.”
