Indeed. And far be it from me to presume anything beyond what the Vatican’s own website might consider... :-)
However, NYer has some excellent evidence that it is St. Francis of Assisi.

It has been reported with confirmation he was clear in saying ‘Francis’ is for the Francis of Assisi.
(I just have been browsing around and this is the case reported here and there but I dont remem where.)

He hasn't yet told us why but one presumes it's after Saint Francis who was born in Assisi. He said he chose the name for St. Francis of Assisi, because of his call to 'rebuild the church' and for his poverty.
