It’s possible that both versions are true. The Pope met with Law — and cordially told him that he would soon be taking up residence in a monastery. “Bare feet on a cold stone floor.”

I don’t see it that way. All we know from this second report is that there is a confirmation that the two men met.

I don’t see that as a conflict. I don’t have a problem with him meeting with Law. Depends what it was about, and what he told Law.
