Depending on how many degrees of separation you want to play, he took the name of Francis after St. Francis of Assissi who was born, Francesco di Pietro di Bernardone :-)

St. Francis was baptized Giovanni (John). His father gave him the nickname Francis (Francesco). “Pietro” was Francis’ father’s name.
