Child porn linked to St. Ann Parish in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Authorities have taken four computers from a Catholic parish office in Independence after determining child pornography had been downloaded on the parish's unsecured Wi-Fi address.

A spokeswoman with the Catholic Diocese of Kansas City – St. Joseph said an investigation began when authorities discovered two child pornography downloads from peer-to-peer websites on Feb. 5 with an IP address from the church’s rectory.

Carrie Cooper, the Director of the Office of Child Protection with the Diocese, said all the computers and electronic storage devices have been taken from the building.

Independence police referred questions about the investigation to the Jackson County prosecutor's office, which declined comment Tuesday.

The parish office's Wi-Fi address wasn't password-protected, meaning people nearby could have used the parish's connection to download the material.

Church officials said the Diocese is cooperating with the investigation.

This is easy to determine by examining temp files on the computers and MAC addresses listed in the wifi router logs.

Anyone who knows what he is doing will use a MAC spoofer.

Correct but we know that the users in the Parish most likely would not know that if they had a wifi open with no password - still even with MAC adress spoofing there are many other ways to determine if the Parish PCs were the source of the requests.

IMHO someone who dislikes Catholics did a bit of wardialing and followed it up by SWAT-ting the parish.

ALWAYS secure your wireless networks. WPA2 with a minimum 13-character password is the least amount of security that you should accept. Using WEP (which is unfortunately STILL usually the default protocol on WiFi routers) is just daring somebody to try to crack your network.

"Sounds like another priest practicing “celibacy” again."

Actually, it sounds more like someone with a kewl name like, "priestdestroyer" framing the parish because they hate Christianity and especially Catholics.

Probably the case that it was someone else.

However, if someone at the Church loaded something onto the computers, then seizing the computer is the right thing to do.

Missouri is the "SHOW ME" state, so not guilty until proven so...

SOUNDS MORE LIKE AN UNSECURED WIFI PROBLEM...

Let us both follow this story to see who the guilty party is -- someone in the parish office. Or someone attacking the Catholic Church.

Those liking to attack the Catholic Church:

Liberal-Lying Media
Homosexuals
Hollywood Actors/Actresses
Planned Parenthood and NARAL (abortion supporters)

Basically, the above mentioned folks will get you flamed pretty bad on FreeRepublic if you try to some kind things about...

Wardialing is an old term for using an unsecured WiFi network. Pull up in a car, connect, download a few megs of kiddie porn and roll away. SWAT-ting is calling the cops and falsely reporting a serious crime (in this case downloading kiddie porn).

“war dialing” is an old term from the days of dial-up modems. It comes from the movie “War Games”. In the old days, hackers would just call every number in a range, and see which ones had a computer modem answer. In present days, it involves cruising around neighborhoods with your laptop, checking to see which houses have unsecured wifi.

It’s a shame that the station didn’t wait to learn the result of the computer search.

Framing? So there wasn’t a huge sexual abuse scandal that rocked the Roman Catholic Church? Must have been a dream...

my bad.

Nope, just a guy who sees a church filled with pedophiles and a bunch of people too blind to see it.

The little cogs in the democrat media machine are trained to see whatever the media says to see wherever their media master tells them to see it. The little cogs obey and repeat the lies and exaggerations their media masters generate in hopes of rising from little cog all the way up to lap dog one of these days.

The only, "huge scandal", is the huge scandal of people who claim to be Christian and/or concerned about pedophiles getting away with pretending to be Christian and/or concerned about pedophiles when all they ever do is repeat whatever lies, exaggerations, and slanders, their media masters spew. That's a huge scandal that's spreading disinformation and outright lies all across the web wherever there are Christians talking to one another about their faith or about politics.

There was a real problem within some Catholic Churches in the US, caused by a very small number of queers who should have never been in the positions they were in. When what it boils down to is 3,000 credible accusations of incidents, incidents that took place over a fifty year period of time, ninety percent of those incidents being attributed to around 300 individuals out of over a quarter of a million individuals, is portrayed as "a huge sex abuse scandal", it's clearly and without a doubt complete agenda driven propaganda garbage like all the other total garbage the media peddles from Global Warming to Gun Control.

Obviously, the loudmouths who slave away on behalf of their media masters aren't showing up whenever the word "Catholic" is in an article because they're bothered by pedophiles or sex abuse. Like their media masters, they hate all Christians who don't go along to get along and bow down to the fascist and queer agendas. The Catholic Church is the largest Christian Church that preaches and has always preached against not only queers, but the whole fascist agenda including eugenics driven infanticide with abortaficient contraceptives. The Catholic Chruch teaches and preaches that the whole secular humanist, fascist, eugenics driven agenda, is a pagan scam straight from from Satan and by definition anti-Christ.

That's why, as the largest Christian Church, they're the primary target of media lies and exaggerations from the anti-Christ crowd. It's also why little cogs are employed by the democrat media machine to try and stir up residual anti-Catholic sentiment so the democrat fascist party can use that anti-Catholic sentiment to their advantage, just like they've used anti-Catholic sentiment to their advantage so many times in the past.

The loudmouthed little cogs aren't fooling anyone even if most people don't take the time to respond to their garbage. The loudmouths, like dogs returning to their vomit, lap up whatever the media spews and regurgitate it wherever they've made a little nest for themselves on the web, returning to that regurgitated propaganda whenever they see an opportunity to toss a lie, exaggeration, or slander, into a series of comments. Especially when they think their lies will go unchallenged because people are ignoring the little cog who constantly posts the same garbage.

Now, I admit that it's possible there are some people who are so stupid that they actually believe whatever the media repeats to them often enough. I'd just rather think someone was a loudmouthed lap dog of the democrat media machine than to think they're so pitifully stupid and gullible that they believe the media garbage they repeat.

The incident in the article these comments are related to is a perfect example of little cogs serving their media masters. Someone sees a network that's unprotected, sees that it's at a Catholic Church, and they download kiddie porn through that network. Even if it turns out that there is nothing on the storage devices taken for investigation, even if it turns out that they can be sure no one in the Church made the downloads, the "everyone knows" element of the anti-Catholic propaganda campaign has been served by putting another little piece of information into the subconscious of a lot of people who won't ever look for the results of the investigation.

That's "everyone knows" aspect of a propaganda campaign is exactly what the little cogs serving their democrat media masters help with by just repeating whatever democrat media masters tell them to focus on whenever they can toss their repetitions into a series of comments.

A long password, not a dictionary word, mixed-case, etc., AND be sure to change your SSID (network name) away from the default, again to something that isn’t a dictionary word. The SSID is part of the encryption key the router uses, as well as the password.

you, of course, don't know what you're talking about. The incidence of child abuse in various denominations are FAR more than in the Catholic Church.....there is, of course no excuse for any of them, but when you live in a glass house, throwing stones can be counter-productive........and it makes you sound STUPID.
