Vatican Spokesman Denies Report that Benedict XVI is Ill

Vatican City, Apr 10, 2013 / 12:28 pm (CNA/EWTN News).- Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi says that contrary to a report in the Spanish daily El Mundo, the Bishop-emeritus of Rome, Benedict XVI, is not suffering from any illness.

The report in El Mundo by Rocio Galvan quotes statements made by Spanish Vaticanista Paloma Gomez-Borrero in Madrid during the presentation of her most recent book.

“Benedict XVI has something very serious. In 15 days his physical condition has deteriorated tremendously, that’s the news I have,” Gomez-Borrero said.

In comments to CNA on April 10, however, Fr. Lombardi underscored that Benedict XVI “does not have any illness” and that “this has been certified by his doctors.”

He said he was saddened by Gomez-Borrero's comments and that the Spanish journalist, whom he has known for many years, “has begun to speculate after seeing images of a tired Benedict.”

“But to say that he has an illness is foolish. There is no basis for this,” the spokesman said.

Discuss the issues all you want, but do not make it personal.

Praise God!
I am MUCH happier now.
The Vatican must stay atop of all news regarding Papa Benedict. I love him with all my heart.

Accusing another Freeper of being a parasite is attributing motive, it is "making it personal."

If you do not wish to see Religion Forum posts, do NOT use the "everything" option on the Free Republic browse option list. Instead, browse by "News/Activism." When you log back in, the browse will reset to "everything" - so be sure to set it back to "News/Activism."

Why don’t you post things of interest to Roman Catholics on Roman Catholic web sites? I think those thing exist. No

Um....there are Roman Catholics on this web site. Lots of them. Am I hearing a "Catholics not welcome" theme here? What exactly is the problem with posting Catholic threads in an open Religion forum which is read by many Catholics?

Too many threads? Then how about a quota for posters? What would a reasonable quota be, do you think?

One/annum?

The problem is FreeRepulic. I accept you Romans have monopolized the Religion thread. I can’t do anything about that

But FreeRepublic won’t give us the option to see everything EXCEPT the religious thread. That’s their fault.

"Monopolized"?

That's a strange term. It's an open forum. There are no restrictions on who posts what. We have no monopoly. We exert no control. Most threads are indeed Catholic but that's not because we've gamed the system to give ourselves some sort of unfair advantage. And yes, you can do something about it. Tell us what's hot in the Baptist or Presbyterian world or wherever. I don't care what you post and I promise I won't show up on your threads complaining.

You'd be aware of course, that from time to time, a significant percentage of Catholic threads are in fact posted by non-Catholics. They're posted by Freepers who specialize in a...*cough*....certain type of Catholic news; namely that which treats of Catholic scandal and shows the Church in an unfavorable light.

I haven't seen you complaining about that.

I haven't seen you complaining about that.

Not that anybody else does. Oh no, that never happens around here. There are no complaints about those sorts of things...[pause for big eye-roll gesture]...although I notice you yourself refrain from publicly getting all bent out of shape concerning potentially critical items. I commend you for that.

For others, one of our esteemed FR correspondents need only make an appearance to have some around here practially foaming at the mouth. A few days, a week or a bit more ago, I witnessed one participant blame THAT guy for the existence of a thread which you, yourself started, just for reason he posted a reply, lol!

So think about it. What's the real difference? I'd ping that fellow, but why make the thread about particular individuals? I'm going for a wider, generic view or commentary towards what occurs here, and how people react.

That was what you were talking about, isn't it?

Post your own news, if you've got any, and stop whining about ours.

Haw! That's rich. Don't whine about your news, when someone else posts it. Post the good and the bad yourself, and avoid the self-whining.

Please keep up the good work, Alex. You're one of Catholicism's biggest assets on this forum, though you're blissfully unaware of it.

The only thing I'm "blissfully unaware of" is the arrival of a corned beef sandwich on rye, no mustard.

“When we prefer to gossip, gossip about others, criticize others- these are everyday things that happen to everyone, including me – these are the temptations of the evil one who does not want the Spirit to come to us and bring about peace and meekness in the Christian community”. “These struggles always exist” in the parish, in the family, in the neighborhood, among friends”.
-- from the thread Pope: The struggle to reject gossip
