The Slide Toward State Control

During his Apostolic Visit to the United States, on April 16, 2008, which was also his birthday, Pope Benedict XVI was welcomed to the White House by President George W. Bush. The Pope expressed the hope that his visit would be a source of renewal to the Church in the United States. Early in his remarks, he noted the important role that religion has played in shaping American history: “From the dawn of the Republic, America’s quest for freedom has been guided by the conviction that the principles governing political and social life are intimately linked to a moral order based on the dominion of God the Creator.” Later in his address, he underscored that positive relationship that can exist between Church and State: “The Church, for her part, wishes to contribute to building a world ever more worthy of the human person, created in the image and likeness of God” (cf. Genesis 1:26-27).

Less than five years later, under the presidency of Barack Obama, Benedict’s words of hope are undergoing a severe test. In the last month of the Holy Father’s pontificate, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. bishops’ conference, expressed an altogether different outlook: “There remains the possibility that ministries may yet be forced to fund and facilitate … morally illicit activities. In obedience to our Judeo-Christian heritage, we have consistently taught our people to live their lives during the week to reflect the same beliefs that they proclaim on the Sabbath. We cannot now abandon them to be forced to violate their morally well-informed consciences.”

President Obama, has made his disregard for the consciences of Christians as well as his disregard for religious freedoms, sufficiently clear. His stance on these issues has provoked a blizzard of lawsuits. The President does not mind Christians worshipping on Sundays....

I think the Gosnell trial is damning of the human race and in the eyes of God, and of America.

If we were to look at this evil in the face and rationally deal with its consequences, then we might hope for redemption. But I think most people, even I, find it hard to stomach the evidence and testimony that is recorded at trial.

The mere thought of a baby screaming while being murdered or any of the other horrors of the trial testimony are enough to remove all semblance of humanity and make one turn eyes and ears away from the truth. I can only think these reports are mirrored in history by the historical accounts of the millions of Jews and others that were exterminated by Nazis.

The entire Abortion on Demand phenomenon is on trial in Gosnell and the news media are still attempting a blackout of sorts but the faithful are also quiet presumably because the horror is too great. It shames souls to the point of spiritual petrification.

How to get people back onto a footing of humanity? It may be time for the faithful and also those with some semblance of a moral conscience to draw a line and say enough is enough.

Roe versus Wade needs to be revisited, laws must be made firm to abolish abortion on demand, sexual promiscuity leading to conception must be held to account and a record of these heinous atrocities laid in the historical archives of the nation.

Even those that have partaken privately in abortion on demand must be persuaded to repent and become active and vocal in abolishing this inhumane evil. We must forgive them and ourselves, and resolve to establish value in life and for the faithful to create works that are pleasing to God. Else I believe we are damned.
