Hoax history: it started out as an unverified, unattributed e-mail. It was picked up by the website of the Diocese of Surrey, England, without author, source or documentation.

Then Damian Thompson of the Telegraph, published it in his column with explicit cautions that it had not been verified; then, in updates, Thompson himself concluded it was a hoax.

Then the Diocese of Surrey took it off their website.

Finally, Snopes.com found it to be a fake. Fun, but fabricated.
