The Power of a Praying Son [for his unemployed father]

The Power of a Praying Son

The Spirit showed me how to pray and what to say.

The Power of a Praying Son

Dad had essentially been unemployed for about ten years. He had jobs here and there in our hometown of Stafford, England, but they never worked out.

He had always come across as cheerful and confident, but we watched his confidence erode as the years passed. Although he was a practicing Catholic, his church attendance seemed to offer him no real consolation. He knew none of the joy and peace that I and others had come to know in a personal relationship with Jesus.

I wanted him to know what I knew and would encourage him to pray and read his Bible. So would Mum. Poor Dad! These encouragements would generally be met with, “Yes, I know I should,” but then nothing would happen. He’d continue to be burdened and weighed down—and we’d be exasperated!

Keeping Vigil. One night I resolved to pray for my dad throughout the night. I only made it to about 2:00 a.m., but by that time I had received an answer and some direction.

I had been asking the Lord why Dad seemed unable to move on in his walk with him. The Lord gave me a sense that Dad had spiritual enemies who were working against him. He also gave me Psalm 13 as a Scripture to pray every day. I adapted it a bit, praying it for Dad like this:

“How long, O Lord? Will you forget him forever? How long will you hide your face from him? How long must he bear pain in his soul, and have sorrow in his heart all day long? How long shall his enemy be exalted over him?

“Consider and answer him, O Lord my God! Give light to his eyes, or he will sleep the sleep of death, and his enemy will say, “I have prevailed”; his foes will rejoice because he is shaken.

“But I trusted in your steadfast love; my heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.”

Five Minutes a Day. I prayed this every night for over a year. Then in Easter of 1989, I was home from college and went out for a beer with Dad. Before we went out, I prayed for him, and the Lord put on my heart to pass along a message: “Tell him I just want him to pray to me five minutes a day.” That was it. No pressure tactics. No urging and cajoling. No cost-benefit analysis. Just a simple message.

So there we were in the pub, and we had the best father-son time I can remember. I shared with Dad about the Lord’s work in my own life. He was smiling and seemed to enjoy listening to me. Then I passed on the message to him and told him that God wanted him to know that he was his son.

After that, Dad did begin to pray and read his Bible. In a letter he sent me when I was back at college, he passed on a bit of financial advice and then wrote, “By the way, I am praying for five minutes every day … at least!” Also, at long last, he got a job that he enjoyed. We began to see some of his old confidence return.

One night around this time, as I began to pray my usual Psalm 13 for Dad, I sensed the Lord saying, “You don’t need to pray it any more. I’ve answered it.” So I began to thank God every night instead.

On May 20, 1989, a couple of months after that chat with Dad over a beer, I was awakened by a phone call. It was Mum, calling with the news that Dad had passed away the previous night. The day before he died, she said, he had attended a prayer meeting. Someone commented to Mum afterward: “He looked so happy!”

After I got off the phone with Mum, although grieved, I was utterly awestruck at what God had done. He had directed me to pray a specific piece of his ancient word, and in response, he had delivered my dad from his enemies. I had an assurance about Dad’s place in eternity that I would not have had otherwise.

“My heart shall rejoice in your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me.”

This is moving. It also describes what ‘long term’ i.e. permanent unemployment does to a person's soul. I have heard similar stories from friends visiting the UK of men who live in cities ‘without jobs’ or young men whoever have had a job, they just shift from one ‘job training program’ to another. These are not loafers and Lay abouts but people who have been ‘deindustrialized’. One can say that they should relocate or have acquired a different set of job skills but now this s happening here and not just regionally as in the Rust Belt in the 80’s. Long term unemployment is destructive of the personality and ‘soul’ of men especially. For anyone interested i have a detailed story of a young man in Durham who sustained a pretty bad injury to his shoulder and arm not long after entering the Royal Army and his trip into anomie land that followed.

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH!

Heavenly Lord, Please Hold This Unemployed Father In The Shelter Of Your Healing Wings!

The Twenty-Third Psalm
Mahalia Jackson
(Click)

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

Psalm 23 -KJV

Genuflectimus non ad principem sed ad Principem Pacis!

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

What an inspiring story.

I wanted to ask my fellow Catholic Freepers for some advice. My uncle is dying of pancreatic cancer. He is in the advanced stages we believe. I know he does not practice any sort of religion, I don’t even know if he is baptized or if he even prays.

I have been praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet for him everyday from far away. (I will be seeing him next weekend and will pray the chaplet in his presence). I am arranging for a tridum of masses to be offered up for him. I have put him on a prayer line, and I have asked Our Lady and many of the saints to intercede for him that he would have a conversion, and a happy and holy death.

I want so much to send a priest over but I can’t for obvious reasons. My aunt isn’t practicing her faith so she probably won’t do anything.

Help! If there is anything else I can do I’d love to hear suggestions.

I missed the obvious reasons. If you know a priest who would be willing to try to reach your uncle, couldn't you ask him to visit, perhaps with you? At worst, your uncle (or aunt) would say, "I'm not interested, please go away," or something similar ... but at least you'd have tried.

That said, it sounds like you're doing all you can. Only God knows the outcome.

The “obvious” reason is that he is not catholic. I don’t even know if he is baptized.

Oh, that makes sense. Still, if you know a priest who would go out on a limb, what could it hurt?

I have seen and heard literally miracles with the St Benedict living prayer Medal. I give them out at times. These medals need to be anointed.

 photo StBenedictMedal-1.gif

USE OF THE MEDAL The greater number of favours obtained during our own times by means of St Benedict's medal have reference to the instantaneous conversion of sinners who had been callous to all that had previously been tried in order to bring them to God We will mention a few of these instances.

In a provincial town of France there was living a gentleman in very comfortable circumstances who had once held a Government appointment His sister an exceedingly pious widowed lady nursed him with the most affectionate care during his frequent attacks of illness but was above all most anxious to induce her dear brother to think upon doing something for his salvation Hitherto all her efforts had been fruitless No matter how gentle or indirect her attempts they were all met with this cold answer Do not talk to me about seeing a priest I cannot bear to hear the subject mentioned The sister went at last to a friend and told him in confidence of her trouble and he said to her Pay no attention to your brother's answer persevere in your entreaties.

If by your silence you suffer him to fall into hell he would surely not excuse you In this wav several years elapsed.

In the December of 1846 after a short illness there were evidences of gangrene the doctors not only pronounced such to be the case but moreover that an operation would be useless and finally that the sick man could not live two days longer The friend who had advised the sister not to be deterred by the words of her brother one day came to see her.

She was overwhelmed with grief but declared that not even now had she the courage to put the question to him.

Well then says the friend take these two medals of St Benedict keep one for yourself that the devil may not hinder you from doing your duty and put the other under your brother's pillow She took his advice and five minutes had scarcely passed when the following conversation took place between the brother and sister Dear sister said the sick man Well brother what is it My dear sister do you not think it would be right to send for the priest.

The priest was accordingly sent for and soon arrived the sick man received him with joy and all the rites of the Church were administered Two days after he died in the most edifying dispositions.

I’ve also heard of people broguht to conversion by having the Miraculous Medal placed under their side of the bed by the Catholic spouse.

Whenever I am involved in RCIA — I always get people (and especially the person I sponsor) a miraculous medal.

Amen! Great Post by the way!

I read a Protestant reverend who used St Benedict medals at possessed people's homes years ago. I never get a bad dream when wearing one. If you meet new age people when wearing it can be very interesting.

Ask him about who he loves or what things in this life have brought him pleasure. All of this has a Source and that Source is God, a good God who loves mankind and does not despise nor reject the work of His hands.

He has defeated the enemy, Satan and death, who sought to block His love and made the way open to live with Him forever. He is truly The Good Shepherd - Psalm 23.

You might find out about administering Baptism to him yourself, just in case. God bless you.
