Stanek weekend question from teen: How do you handle insults? (Pro-Life)

I received the following email this week and given permission to ask all of you this brave pro-life teen’s question:

Ho. I’m a proud fifteen year old pro-life Jesus Freak named ____. I just want to say God bless you for your work saving babies. Also how do you handle when you get yelled at and called evil for being pro-life? Someone insulted me and called me evil and stupid and un-Christian. What’s the best way to deal with it?

Your suggestions?

I would tell this teen that being a Christian involves ridicule, sacrifice and obedience. To stand by what is true sometimes means being the “weird” one or the “ridiculed” one. When I was Confirmed as a Catholic many moons ago, the Cardinal would touch his hand to your face (in the olden days, they would actually give you a small slap). The reason was now that you are Confirmed, you will be hurt because you stand by your faith. Evil comes in many forms. Ridicule, insults, etc... are some of those forms. Stand true, stand strong, stand by your faith and the rewards of Heaven will be great. Well... that is what I would say.

Having been overweight my entire life, I’ve learned over time to just let it all slide away. Avail yourself of the depths of the English language and revel in the lack of originality in most kids’ insults. That was my defense, and to this day it works.

It also sometimes helps to make light of yourself in front of those who would think less of you. If you show the world that you can’t be insulted, the world often won’t even try. I’m not saying it doesn’t hurt when it happens, but learning how to keep walking often infuriates them more than a witty retort.

The teen should know that when they get yelled at for being pro-life, that they are doing the right thing!

God bless him/her.

Depends on the circumstances.

Sometimes:

“I’m not the one trying to justify killing babies, sweetheart.”

“Who promised you a life free of consequences for your behavior?”

“Watch the summary of the Dr. Gosnell trial, and then ask yourself if you would like to defend his actions.”

or, if a softer touch is appropriate:

“Pray that God will change your heart.”

You know you are over the target when you are catching flak.

time to start hanging out with kids that agree with you.

Tell the person sweetly that, no matter what she says to you, you are glad that she is alive, that her mother gave her life instead of crushing and flushing her when she had the chance. Also tell her that you will keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

Then go away calm. You broke some ground. You planted some seeds. You did fine. Know that the haters have hard hearts, and it will take God’s help to soften them, in His time.

Tell them all life is sacred including the life some consider inconvenient: The dying elderly, the unborn infant, the disabled without hope of recovery, the mentally ill, the mentally challenged.
