"The future of Syria cannot be built on destruction, said Melkite Catholic Patriarch Gregory III Laham, lamenting the failure of the European Union to renew a ban on the arming of Syrian rebels.
France and Great Britain are expected to lead a drive to provide military assistance the rebels seeking to oust the Assad regime. But the Melkite prelate said that support for the rebels does not ease the suffering of Syrias people.
The Catholic leader characterized the current struggle in Syria as a fundamentally religious dispute-- between Sunnis and Shiites-- rather than a drive for democracy or a bid to replace an oppressive regime.

Why is the left (not this guy) so intent on supporting the side that is supported by Al Queda? They already have two strikes against them in Egypt and Libya.
When we take sides in a Muslim civil war, hundreds of millions of Muslims immediately hate us for it, and that hatred lasts.
The few million whose side we took, their gratitude is brief, and their sense of human rights is about as advanced as their predecessors’.
And then we take in few hundred thousand refugees who hate us because we feel responsible for them. Unless they are Christian. Then we don’t.
These are the voices this regime and their media co-conspirators are avoiding. That includes some in the Roman rite who’s reasoning escapes me.
