The bible indicates we are less adaptive than Noah’s time by the lifespans. It also reports that living things were created fully grown. Science never assumes a living thing exists without process, yet genesis claims instantaneous creation of fully grown man, animals, birds, plants etc. Even putting aside evolution, the text cannot be reconciled with science on how a plant came into existence.
The bible says earth is created at the beginning. Science indicates that earth is not as old as the universe. These two starting points are not reconciled by gap theory. Gap theory needs to assume two separate creations of earth. The text itself cannot lead someone to that conclusion. Other texts are used in order to arrive at that conclusion and these other texts do not deal specifically with the creation sequence. While the gap theory points to other scripture, it ignores scripture that says God created in 6 days.
Even if we accept the gap theory as true, the problem still exists with the sequence of events in remaining days. One example is the timing of fruit bearing trees coming before sunlight. Gap theory only fixes time, not sequence.
Thanks RAYCPA, I really didn’t post this thread to endorse the gap theory, I agree with you entirely.
Thank you for your explanation
What if the earth wasn’t made void and formless? What if there was something here before 6,000 years ago, and it was destroyed? That could happen in the time before the second sentence of Genesis.
Maybe, God created the Earth perfect with life and it was made formless and void for some reason. Then, 6k years ago, he started over. It isn’t a “Gap” theory. It is a second creation theory. That would explain old rock formations, fossils, natural fission formations, radioactive dating, etc. and would not be contrary to the time line of the Bible at all. It would NOT endorse evolution, but would give a reasonable explanation of why there are old fossils.
However, if I am wrong, does it really matter?
Proverbs 8:22 onward and many other places imply a much older earth than 6,000 years. Also, the light in verse is from the sun though it was not visible as a heavenly body because the sky (the first heaven) was not visibly clear until verse 14. The point of reference is established in verse 2 as upon the face of the waters (earth’s surface). God’s days in Genesis chapter 1 are ages of time and do not contradict the speed of light, radioactive decay and other laws of physics established in the creation.
Proverbs 8:22 teaches that the Wisdom of God preceded Creation, I have no dispute with that. As for the Sun, it wasn’t created until the fourth day. Those natural laws you cited are the laws of the Creator, I agree so there is no way that He wouls contradict them, however, I believe that All of Creation was created in a perfect and mature state. In other words, Adam wasn’t created as a fetus, but s a full grown man, so also trees, mountains, lights of all kinds, (Celestial) were created in a functioning complete, form. The Days in Genesis are cited as “Evening and morning”, therefor they re days as we know them.
The issue was not about different interpretations, the issue was that science and the text of genesis are not reconcilable.
I disagree, but that is ok. We had a good conversation.
