Christian university retaliates against pro-life student for showing graphic reality of abortion

Four months ago Diana Jimenez had an epiphany.

“I was pro-life but had no idea what an abortion looked like,” Diana told me today by phone. “Then I actually saw a video of an abortion, and my heart broke in pieces.”

A senior nursing student at Biola, a Christian university in La Mirada, California, Diana (pictured right) promptly launched a pro-life group and invited Gregg Cunningham, executive director of the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, to speak. After a great deal of energy was expended to publicize, only four students showed up.

Diana was compelled to attempt greater outreach, and the clock was ticking, with graduation just around the corner.

“I felt the need to expose the truth at the center of campus,” explained Diana. “The more I learned, the more I knew pictures were the most effective means. Pictures move beyond ways that words can express.”

Diana received permission to host a table with resources about abortion. On May 8 she, with a few representatives from CBR and two fellow students, set up her table after chapel let out, also displaying graphic signs of abortion.

In all, 1,500 students – some hostile – saw the signs before school administrators shut the group down.

“The campus safety officer’s biggest argument was, ‘You didn’t ask for permission,’” said Diana, who didn’t know she needed additional approval to show the signs. “They had a huge concern to not upset students, but it seemed no one gave a rip about the babies who are dying in the milions.”

SDbiopicsMatthew2012So Diana wrote a letter asking for permission to hold one sign for one hour – and was promptly turned down by Associate Dean of Students Matthew Hooper, pictured left.

Diana met with Hooper, offering to erect a warning sign and to have resources and counselors on hand, “but he told me ‘visceral images are not appropriate,’” said Diana.

Diana begged and pleaded and tried to think of various ways to work with the school but was flatly rejected.

Hooper told The Biola University Chimes, “We would agree to them displaying them in areas that are more enclosed where students can choose to see them.”

Diana’s response? “We tried to do it in a building, and four people is the turnout we got. This is exactly what the enemy wants – to hide abortion, hide the truth,” said Diana. “And Christians are helping.”

2013-06-05_1708So on May 17, exactly one week before graduation, Diana decided she was forced to override human authority and again try to show the truth about abortion to students.

Solo, with one sign, Diana was shut down within 10 minutes by campus chief of security John Ojeisekhoba, who threatened to have her arrested and to not be allowed to graduate.

Diana got that debacle on video, which CBR has juxtaposed with excerpts of a speech by Biola president, Dr. Barry Corey, challenging Biola students to have the courage to stand for their convictions. “Courage is the fruit of conviction,” opined Corey. “The two must remain inseparable”…

In response to Ojeisekhoba’s threats to sue if Diana released the video, from a press release today:

She didn’t post this video. I, Gregg Cunningham, did, and I welcome any criminal or civil action the chief wishes to pursue. For his convenience, my contact information can be found at abortionNO.org.

Associate Dean Hooper followed up Diana’s second infraction with a letter threatening that if showed her signs a third time the consequences for “rebelling against authority” would be she couldn’t participate in commencement and would be banned from campus.

Meanwhile, Nurse Ratcheds exist in more than movies. Diana’s dean of nursing decided to take matters into her own hands and mete her own consequence. On May 22 Dr. Susan Elliott wrote a letter to all nursing faculty barring them from writing a letter of employment reference for Diana.

image005 “She took this upon herself without being asked,” said Diana. “This effects my entire vocational career.”

Diana maintains Elliott’s consequence is not within her authority and also not in the Biola handbook. I hope a pro-life attorney helps Dr. Elliott see the error of her ways.

Ironically, Elliott went to Washington, D.C., in March to lobby for conscience protections.

Elliott needs to lobby herself.

“The hypocrisy I’ve seen is also disappointing,” lamented Diana. “When I told Dr. Elliott the punishment was inappropriate, she said I should have thought about that before. Seriously? I’m trying to save lives, and this is what she does?”

Diana has since written a letter to the Biola administration and nursing department faculty explaining her motivation for showing the reality of abortion.

“Most people on this campus would say they’re pro-life, but they don’t have a strong enough conviction to do anything about it,” said Diana. “You can say you’re a Christian all day long, but where’s the evidence? We are challenged at Biola to say what we believe and what are we going to do about it.

“Four months ago I didn’t know anything about the issue,” Diana concluded. “These last four months have changed my life forever. I can’t believe we’re doing absolutely nothing for these babies or the women.”

Take action. Per CBR:

We are urging people of conscience to email Biola and ask the administration to stop abusing its students with repressive restrictions on expressive rights.

There is one religious group I despise more than the soldiers of Mohammad.

Christians who fly the rainbow flag and cover up infanticide.
Despicable.

It seems that most “Christian” institutions have come to worship the almighty dollar more than the ALMIGHTY, so anyone who rocks the boat endangers their future contributions and must be silenced.

Unfortunately many Christians suffer from cranial rectilitis over the abortion issue. They don’t want to hear or see the facts about the gruesome practice.

Christians who fly the rainbow flag and cover up infanticide.

They aren't really Christians. They are fooling themselves.

Hypocrite's.

Another "Christian" institution dedicated to the American Church of Nice First Commandment; "go along to get along".

“Another ‘Christian’ institution dedicated to the American Church of Nice First Commandment; ‘go along to get along’.”

Hardly.
Perhaps everyone can check for facts in addition to this article.
I don’t know the story other than this article, but I know the institution and the students who go there.
This is one institution suing the US government over the Obamacare mandates.
This gal was actually “signing” to the choir.
All she had to do was go down the street to the local strip mall and hold her signs up there to a more ignorant group of people.

I think both sides are in the wrong on this. The school for failing to set appropriate guidelines/expectations in the beginning and threatening to prevent her from graduating and banning her from campus.

I don't think she was wrong to stand up for what she believed in, or for her cause. By her own admission most of the people on campus would say they are pro-life. I think she was in the wrong for her in your face manner with grotesque pictures. If she wanted to have a display that brought the attention to abortion and have the grotesque pictures in a room people can chose to visit, so be it. The school allowed her to do so. What they did not want was obscene pictures visible for everyone that walked by.

I am about as pro-life, anti-baby murder as they come. But, I do get peeved at those that decide I nee to see mutilated babies without the option to avoid it.

War is hell too. But I don't have the urge to display pictures of blown apart bodies, dogs eating mutilated enemy combatants, or cats climbing out of stomach cavities with flesh in their mouth to demonstrate the pain and suffering guys with PTSD go through. Nor, do I have the urge to show shot up and bleeding servicemen with their intestines hanging out to bring attention to the Wounded Warrior Project.

I find homosexuality detrimental to the public health and grotesque, but I don't need to show pictures of two homosexual men committing depraved acts to prove it and gain support for traditional family groups.

Babies pre-birth and throughout gestation....no issues, but I personally don't want to see the remains of an abortion...ie a murdered baby. It isn't going to make me anymore pro-life.....but it will make me think you are crass, indecent, inflammatory and tune me out to anything you have to say if you shove it in my face.

Yes, I get it that some people don't make the connection that they are babies. Show pictures of babies that will endear people, not a murdered mess that will tick people off at the messenger.

Jut my two cents.

“Singing to the choir” doesn’t get a person hung. It gets them support.

The choir may be singing the ‘right’ song, but they’re totally out of tune.

I will be praying that events come together to cause them to loose their educational accreditation. That they reap all that they’ve sown for better or for worse, and let the Almighty sort it out.

Christianity is Reasoned-—you can never use human beings as a “means to an end”. Sodomy and abortion are antithetical to Christian Ethics.

Marxists destroy the meaning of Words——to shape perceptions....they have been demonizing (undermining) Christian Ethics in the schools since the 50’s-—to destroy the ability of children to “think” like a Christian.

A lot of graduates are non-thinking “useful idiots”—brainwashed by “operant conditioning”—to reinforce “emotions” and destroy knowledge-—so the lemmings are easily “controlled” by “words” to elicit the proper emotions-—ex: Christians =bigots/haters. Capitalists=greedy, selfish, polluters.

People can’t “reason” when emotion trumps knowledge and they have been brainwashed by schools and TV for 12 years or more to “think” “Evil is Good”.

Tolerance is a Virtue to the man without Convictions (Chesterton).

"All she had to do was go down the street to the local strip mall and hold her signs up there to a more ignorant group of people."

Total Excuse-itis & selective blindness. Both a side effects of having contracted a bad case of American Church of Nice Virus

If she can't show the Truth on campus the people in charge are dead wrong, no matter how nice the place is.

She got permission to have the little table and she put the Truth on display on her little table. Her displaying what each and every one of the people "in the choir" should as a matter of school policy be exposed to and haven't been was just making up for the school being too nice to teach the students the Truth. It's obvious the people in charge of the school are badly infected with American Church of Nice Virus. If they really object to BarryCare on moral grounds they'd already be presenting what she was presenting.

BarryCare impacts their money, money, money, so they're fighting BarryCare. Displaying the Truth might bother some of the wallets in the pews, so to speak, so they ignore the Truth. If she had displayed a few little "Precious Moments" porcelains that said, "abortion isn't nice" instead of the unvarnished Truth, they'd have given her an award for being "nice" and creative. That's the fact Jack.

Thanks for the info, but I'm not buying the line that just because they don't want to pay out more to the government it excuses coming down on this girl like a ton of bricks over what they should have supported. Especially the bit about telling people to not write her any recommendation. I guess that's a good example of how a Good Christian should react to someone displaying the Truth?.

Stay nice & Ta Ta for now .

As a long time BIOLA graduate I am utterly ashamed of the actions taken by my alma mater. The powers that be at BIOLA: President Barry Corey, Dean of Students Danny Paschall, Associate Dean of Students Matthew Hooper, campus chief of security John Ojeisekhoba and the disgraceful Dr. Susan Elliott, DIRECTOR and professor of BIOLA University Nursing Department should all be ashamed of themselves because the Lord Jesus Christ certainly is!

If Dr. Curtis Mitchell, the beloved former professor of Biblical Studies were still alive and teaching at BIOLA, there would be hell to pay. If Dr. Curtis Mitchell were still alive and teaching at BIOLA, there would be hell to pay but it appears that "God has left the building" and the “christian” professors residing and teaching at BIOLA are now gutless wonders who are “christian” in name only: fearing man rather than almighty God.

In spite of all of BIOLA’s numerical and institutional growth, polish and "Christian" veneer, someone needs to write ICHABOD over the entrance to the school.

As for Dr. Corey's wildly hypocritical video statement and challenge to BIOLA students that: "Courage is the fruit of conviction," while at the same time he is actively persecuting one of BIOLA's students for doing exactly what he said the students should do! ...someone needs to remind the good "doctor" that "TALK IS CHEAP" and this so-called "christian" President will one day give an account of his heinous actions before the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I wouldn't want to be in his shoes on that day.

Given the overwhelming evidence, BIOLA Alumni should think long and hard about giving BIOLA anymore of their hard earned money until such time (if any) all of the above individuals have been dealt with or dismissed from their positions.

If anyone wants to personally contact the above individuals, and let them know exactly how you feel about what they have done, their e-mail contact information is located here:

But she is more right than wrong. Abortion is done out of our sight and we don’t want to think we are condoning horrific acts. Yes, an birth out of wedlock can ruin people’s lives; yes, it kills a baby. Emotionally we sympathize more then the mother than her unborn child, because we DON”T see HOW she rids herself of that unwanted child.

“I think she was in the wrong for her in your face manner with grotesque pictures.”

That is probably the second-most effective way to end legalized abortion - show it for what it is. The most effective way (according to a demonstrator I know) is to sing “Happy Birthday” outside the abortion mills. Expectant mothers find it hard to kill their babies after hearing a chorus of that...
