Daily Gospel Commentary

Thursday of the Ninth week in Ordinary Time
Commentary of the day
Saint [Padre] Pio de Pietrelcina (1887-1968), Capuchin
Ep 3, 1246, 1010

Love of God and men

I am consumed by a twofold flame: love of God and of people. It's like a volcano inside me that is constantly erupting and that Jesus has put in my heart, small as it is...

My God! Become ever more present to my poor heart and complete the work you have begun in me. In my deepest self I hear the voice insisting: “Sanctify yourself and sanctify others!”

This is what I really want, dear child for whom I'm writing all this, but I've no idea where to begin. Help me. I know Jesus loves you very much and that you deserve it, so talk to him on my account: I ask him for the grace to be a less unworthy son of Saint Francis, who can provide an example to my brethren in such a way that they will preserve their fervor and it will increase in me until it makes me a perfect Capuchin.

Weekday
First Reading:
Psalm:
Gospel:
Tobit 6:10-11; 7:1, 9-17; 8:4-9
Psalm 128:1-5
Mark 12:28-34

It is clear therefore that, in the supremely wise arrangement of God, sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture and the Magisterium of the Church are so connected and associated that one of them cannot stand without the others. Working together, each in its own way, under the action of the one Holy Spirit, they all contribute effectively to the salvation of souls.
