Wouldn’t that be like marrying your own MIL?

According to Mormon historian Todd Compton, in his book In Sacred Loneliness: The Plural Wives of Joseph Smith, Smith entered into the following polygamous marraiges:

• eleven wives between the ages of 14 and 20 years old,
• nine wives between 21 and 30 years old,
• eight wives between 31 and 40 years old, two wives between 41 and 50 years old, and
• three wives between 51 and 60 years old

... for a total of 33 plural marriages. Eleven of Smith's wives were already married to other men at the time Joseph Smith married them.

In summary, out of Smith's 33 plural wives, twenty were under age 30 and thirteen were over age 30. A third of all the wives were married to someone else when Smith took them.
