Vanity Fair in Italy on Wednesday named Pope Francis its "Man of the year", saying the pontiff's first 100 days at the Vatican had already made him one of the world's top leaders.

Splashing on its front page a picture of the 76-year-old in his simple white robes, the magazine said his words and actions were "heavier than boulders."

"The first 100 days of his pontificate have already propelled him to the top of the list of world leaders who are making history," said Vanity Fair Italy, adding: "The revolution continues."

The magazine also published interviews with five celebrities, including British pop star Elton John and Italian singer Andrea Bocelli, who paid homage to the Argentinean pope.

John said Francis was "a miracle of humility in an age of vanity."

"I hope he manages to get his message even further, to the most marginalised in society, to those communities which ... desperately need his love. I am thinking for example of homosexuals," added the openly gay pop icon.

Fantastic! And they’re right! As much as I loved BXVI, he didn’t have this perspective - and he knew it, which is why he resigned..

Given Jesus’ comments about being loved or hated by the world, I’d rather not make it to any trendy secular’s favorite person list.

A miracle of humility in an age of Vanity Fair.

Now I am not slamming him personally, he isn’t the one who named himself, the Vanity Fair people did that. I’m just sayin if the world loves ya, that isn’t a good thing.

On the other hand, if you can make inroads into the secular community through your humility and love, how can that be wrong?

Just a few days ago the Pope reiterated marriage is between one man and one woman. Yet he still has made an impression based on his humility on a pro gay marriage gay guy.

You’re not going to win any converts with hate. Francis has kept to his principles and won praise from many that don’t even agree with him. It’s a start. Rome wasn’t built in a day!

As Michael Vorris would say, the "Church of Nice" has been collapsing for some time now.

Thank you. I’d much prefer the Pope to be unpopular.

Nonsense, he resigned for health reasons occasioned by advancing age. Just as he said.

I'd prefer the Pope to preach the Gospel, speak the Truth, and let the chips fall where they may. Popularity or unpopularity should be irrelevant to him, and irrelevant to us.

Considering what Christ has said about being loved or hated by the world I completely disagree with that.

Adolph Hitler is almost universally reviled.

A huge fraction of the current world loves Jesus Christ. Or at least claims to.

Being reviled is not the same thing as being unpopular, but I think you know that.

I think you’re trying to make a point that doesn’t hold up.

And I happen to think that your points trying to refute mine doesn’t hold up.
