Fr. Dwight Longenecker created this article about why liberals love Pope Francis (or hope to love him.) He coined a phrase the “Pelosi Catholic” which “Magesterial Catholics” liked so much he decided to fully define it. Here are both of Father Longenecker’s articles.
Why are progressive Catholics and the secular press so in love with Pope Francis? Not because they love the Catholic faith, but because they see Francis as a vehicle for their own agenda. The Crescat has a couple of interesting posts about how the press is handling Pope Francis here and here. She says what I feelthat we dont have a problem with Pope Francis and his simple style. What we dislike is the implication by the press that he is the opposite of Benedict. A typical example is a little phrase in an article in the Daily Telegraph today about Francis using a 20 year old Fiat Popemobile rather than the bulletproof Mercedes that Benedict used. The Fiat is contrasted to the other popemobile which had a white leather seat with gold trim. Never mind that the Mercedes company designed, made and gave the safe and efficient and modern popemobile (which cost $450,000.00) to the pope.
Why this love affair with the new Pope from those who have for years hated the Catholic church and branded Pope Benedict as some sort of secret Nazi? If you want to see what all the schmoozy love talk for Francis is about check out this article in the HuffPo by John Sweeney. In it he showcases Matthew Foxs book which gives advice to Pope Francis. You want the Todd Unctuous version of the new Pope? Here it is then in a nutshell:
Because he is poor and comes from a poor country and loves the poor Pope Francis is a secret liberation theologian. Yay! a Marxist Pope! He hasnt said it yet, but hes going to go back to Vatican 2 which the last two popes did everything they could to dismantle. Hes going to listen to the people and not be the Pope. We know this because he calls himself the Bishop of Rome and not Pope. He is going to reverse that rule against contraception and allow pre marital sex. Hes going to allow women priests and married priests and when he gets the chance hell probably allow same sex marriage too!
What really gets me going is the fact that suddenly I hear of lapsed Catholics who love the new pope and non Catholics who think the new pope is marvelous. While I rejoice in this obviously successful PR, Ill believe it when I see them starting to attend Mass and practice their Catholic faith.
Im with the Crescat. Im all for the Pope, but I am increasingly nauseated by the hypocritical devout Catholics and secularists who care nothing for the reality of the Catholic faith, but are captivated by the Popes simple style. What I would like to ask these Pelosi Catholics is if their new found fondness for the Bishop of Rome means they are suddenly converted to being pro-life and pro-marriage and in all things.
Soon enough the progressives will have their knives out for Pope Francis, but before they go against him, they will use him for their own agenda as much as possible. Heres how theyll do it: They will showcase everything he does which seems to fit their Marxist, Freudian worldview. They will ignore everything else. They will cherry pick. A new encyclical? Fugeddaboudit. Wearing brown shoes with holes in? Make a headline! A sermon in favor of marriage and family? Dont mention it. A condemnation of a right wing dictator? Put him on the cover! You see how it goes.
It will happen soon enough. Hell hath no fury like a liberal scorned.
I guess you know that she recently flew to the Vatican to meet him and to receive communion?
I don’t know if the Catholic representatives of the United States, Biden and Pelosi flew together or how they traveled, only that they met with the Pope and received communion at the Vatican.
Not from the Pope. The Pope does not distribute Communion at these gatherings.
Isn’t that spreading misinformation?
Read that post again, there is no misinformation in it at all.
You know, I dont care that it wasnt from the Pope. It was at his **inaugural mass**. I dont care if it was Father XYZ who gave them communion. It shouldnt have happened. Period.
But it did. And something is terribly wrong with that fact.
When will it stop?
Although analogies are never perfect, this situation reminds me of a situation where someone has a party at their house where minors are present. The minor drinks alcohol, but then the adult says “I didn’t hand them the drink”, so all’s good. But it’s not all good. They are just as responsible even if they didn’t actually hand the drink to the minor.

That's all they said to you?
You got off easy.
Better put a flame suit on. When we non-Catholics point that out, we get shredded.

It might be possible that the priest or deacon distributing Communion didn’t know who Pelosi or Biden were, so didn’t have any idea about their beliefs about abortion, or anything else. Another thought is that if the person giving Communion DID know, they didn’t want to disrupt the Mass for the Pope by denying them Communion, and allowed them to take the sin upon themselves for receiving when they KNOW they shouldn’t.
L’enfer n’a aucune fureur comme un libéral méprisé
‘Hell has no fury like a despised liberal’
another way to say it? n’est-ce pas ?
As hard to believe as that is, it doesn't apply to Senator Ted Kennedy.
CORRECTION: Ted Kennedy DID Receive Communion at the Papal Mass BY LIFESITENEWS.COM Fri Apr 18, 2008
""Two of my sons and I attended the Papal Mass yesterday. We were seated in section 216, directly above the section in which Ted Kennedy was seated. Several minutes prior to the general distribution of communion a priest walked down to Ted Kennedy and gave him communion. There was some discussion amongst we in our section about the inappropriateness of his reception of the Host. Be certain, he remained seated not out of some self-enforced respect for the sacrament, but rather out of respect for his girth and mobility."
"Our photographer friend was of course not focusing on Kennedy at the time and did not expect that he would be given this special advance reception of communion. Organizers of the event did not seem to at all be mindful of the public scandal of this occurrence given that they made a special effort to ensure the Senator was given the host despite his very well known lack of communion with the Church on the issues of abortion, homosexuality and other serious moral issues."
You got off easy.
Thanks... I think...
Again, the priest or deacon distributing Communion may have decided he didn’t want the possibility of disruption of the Mass. Either way, if the person receiving Communion isn’t in the proper state of grace, it will be to the detriment of his or her soul.
Disruption of the mass?
Read that description again, the Priest went to Ted Kennedy who was seated out in the church’s audience. Dodd, and Pelosi and John Kerry all, also received communion during the Pope’s visit in 2008.
At first it was mistakenly reported that Ted Kennedy had not taken part in the ceremony because he had not left his seat.
“”WASHINGTON, DC, April 17, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - At the papal Mass at Nationals Park this morning with 46,000 in attendance, pro-abortion Senators John Kerry and Chris Dodd presented themselves for and received Holy Communion. Of note, pro-abortion Senator Ted Kennedy purposefully did not receive Communion. Photos taken by Tom McFadden Director of Admissions at Christendom College and provided first to LifeSiteNews.com, show Kerry and Dodd receiving while Kennedy remains seated as his row leaves to receive Communion.””
Another time:
“According to Novak and other news sources, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and three senators John Kerry, Edward Kennedy, and Christopher Doddreceived Communion at an outdoor Mass at Nationals Park in Washington.”
You got my vote, Ni-Tech.
