NORWOOD, Mo. -- The Wright County Sheriff’s Department spent some time in church Sunday around 11:30 when a man armed with a handgun walked into First Baptist Church in Norwood and fired two shots into the floor.

Church was in service at the time of the incident and two men sitting in the pews tackled the gunman to the floor. The gun sounded again when the gunman was tackled, sending a bullet to the ceiling, according to the Wright County Sheriff Glenn Adler.

One of the men who tackled the gunman suffered a minor shoulder injury during the struggle. No one else was injured in the incident.

The gunman, who may have mental health issues, has been to the church before about a month ago in a separate incident, says Adler.

“He may be upset with the church for reasons that I cannot say right now,” says Adler.

The gunman, whose name has not been released at this time, is in custody and charges are pending.

Updates to this story will be posted as the story unfolds.

The spirit of Flight 93 lives on! Or ... we have met the first responders and they are us.

Hooray for the conservative, born-again, courageous Baptists once again, refusing to simply dive under the pew and wait for a bullet to the head. In my Baptist church, the gunman may (will) end up encountering at least several conceal holders.

I recall that in the shooting a few years ago at Virginia Tech, all the burly young men & libturds cowered in fear waiting to be shot, and the only one who fought back was an elderly Jew, who I believe had survived the holocaust as an infant. And I don't believe that anyone came to help the elderly Jew as he was trying to hold the door shut and was shot in the process. Too bad there weren't a few conservatives there to help out!

The “elderly Jew” also had a Va. carry permit but was denied the right to carry on campus. I attend church every Sunday, and also serve as an usher. I am cleared by my Pastor to be a protector of the flock from any wolves who may wander in. And I am not the only one. We take our worship seriously.

Good for you and I agree on all points. In my state & the adjoining state of WI (where I attend church at a conservative, fundamental, KJV only, Baptist, we also take our worship & security seriously. I know of several conceal carry owners, but I don’t ask for a show of hands, including myself. I won’t ask permission to carry in my local church, as I believe that conservative evangelical churches will be the next targets from the libturds, homos, lesbians, & special protected groups. It pays to be ready for come-what-may.

Things like that didn’t happen there very often at all in the past and probably don’t in more recent times. There was an incident a few decades ago, where a disgruntled church member poured molasses on a piano keyboard—maybe in another church not far from there (can’t remember which one). A few decades ago, there wasn’t anything in Norwood but a sign—nothing much that was open for business anyway. Might have been an elementary school (long time ago).

That MAN held the door so many others could escape out the window. He gave his life for others to live.

This sort of thing did happen in a church near Ogden, UT, about a month ago. We had never, ever had anything like that happen at our church; heck- We haven’t had ANY violence happen in any churches here since we moved here, at least! In this church in this story, there was no one shot. In our church, someone was shot; right on Father’s Day, even!

There was chaos of course, at least at first! People were chasing him down around the block. He had shot one of our parishoners, and aimed the gun at his wife too. He was waving the gun around and talking crazy! The most wonderful thing is, as awful as it was, the guy recovered remarkably quickly! He was out of the hospital in almost 2 weeks, and has returned to church since! He’s even doing some ushering; (which, along with his wife, was what he does often along with others)I saw him this morning.

After the mass was over, he had joined his wife in the foyer. People were coming up to him and asking how he was doing, he smiled and said he was doing much better! All you could see was a large square bandage on his throat. He could talk all right and could be understood. I think they must have done something with his jaw, but otherwise, you couldn’t really tell he’d ever been severely wounded! It was a miracle! He kept telling people it was God that brought him through it!

The shot went in at the back of his head, more toward the ear. It did not hit his brain, thankfully! The ear canal was what stopped the bullet. The bullet traveled down the ear canal and went out across his mouth inside and exited out through a lip, or something. That they said was what kept him from more severe injury or death!
