It is merely a thread telling someone’s story. Why do you say what you do?

A very insightful article: Romeward Bound: Evaluating Why Protestants Convert to Catholicism David Hagopian

From the article I posted which sums it up very well:

I often feel that evidence or argument that is convincing to me should be convincing to everything ... but that’s not how real life is. Every one of us is such a unique bundle of synapses that it’s a miracle we can communicate at all.

Sort of like computer networks, according to my husband ...

Everyone, that is. I’m having these garbleizing episodes more and more often.

One cannot understand even the simplest of truth unless enlightened through the scriptures and by the Holy Spirit. Everything argument is distortion. And we must guard against the hardness of our own hearts. For the evidence that we believe may be heresy.

The early church fathers rightfully understood that there is only one source of truth-the scriptures. As Cyprian stated the Old and NT were “fountains of divine fullness from which the Christian must draw strength and wisdom.”

He helped get me back into the Catholic Church, well his books did.

I have a couple of his books. He sounds down right evangelical at times. But then falls into works to keep your salvation, if I recall correctly.

Could be better - could be worse.
They keep me so busy I can hardly think straight! I’m told this is a good thing.
I hope all is well with you and yours!

Jeremiah 17:9
9 The heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick;
who can understand it?

The early church fathers rightfully understood that there is only one source of truth-the scriptures.

Since you paint them with a broad brush, you ought to be able to present lots of in-context citations backing up this remarkable claim.

But really ... the only source of truth??

So God himself is demoted, and is not a source of truth?

So the church founded by God, which St Paul calls directly, "the pillar and ground of the truth," is not a source of truth?

So creation, which Scripture teaches in several places testifies to God's glory and his law, so that even the Gentiles are "without excuse," is not a source of truth?

Man's right reason, created by God to glorify him, is not a source of truth?

I'm pretty sure that none of the early fathers embraced a notion so manifestly false and contrary to Scripture.

Whatever are you talking about? God Himself wrote the scriptures through men inspired by the Spirit. That is the ONLY source of truth by which we measure everything.

Man's right reason, created by God to glorify him, is not a source of truth?

Man doesn't have a "right reason". No one seeks after God-no, not one. Our hearts are wicked and deceitful in which we are cautioned to guard against. Now if you want to tell me that Aunt Agnes talked to God. And you're confident that she's a good source because she's a pretty nice lady who bakes cookies for the home groups, then perhaps we'll need to talk about this in more detail.

I'm pretty sure that none of the early fathers embraced a notion so manifestly false and contrary to Scripture.

I suggest you re-examine this notion. That is precisely why we have the Bible.

Sort of like the Constitution in political terms, where men in black robes are the ones who have the last say?

Campion was pointing out that what you said in your post #45 was false.

You said there that "The early church fathers rightfully understood that there is only one source of truth-the scriptures."

Of course, that is not true.

How would Abraham have received the truth when there wasn't one line of scripture written yet in his time?

Also, how would the scriptures themselves have been written if the "scriptures were the only source of truth" as you said.    Where would the writers of the various documents of scripture have received the truth, if "the truth was only to be found in the scriptures", and if "the scriptures" as we know them today did not exist yet when they began writing their own "book(s)" of the Bible?

There had to be another "source of truth" besides the scriptures (and there was, and still is, and that "source of truth" is God).

The early Church fathers did not believe that statement you made in post #45, and neither should you.

OK, I'll accept that. There are two sources of truth..the word of God and the Holy Spirit. One is written. One teaches us about God. Would you agree?

1Co 2:13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

One night my hubby - Scot- signed up here and started a conversation with some FReepers. He was called away and wanted me to keep talking to them (it was a weather related thread)
I signed up as Scotswife so they had an idea who they were chatting with.

“More Papist propaganda, using the RF to push their Roman institution.”

Relax, people find their own way, and sometimes make a stop or two before finding what makes them happy. You should not care nor should you take personally when someone differs from your own theological view, and even if they gloat about something.

It’s part of being a grown up, and part of being an American.

Gloating is Constitutionally protected!
