US Bishops Ask Friday Prayers to Combat Pornography

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is asking Catholics to pray, fast, and abstain from meat on September 6 “for those who struggle with pornography use or addiction: that through the help of Christ and wise counselors they may be freed to live a chaste life.”

The US bishops have called the faithful to fasting and prayer each Friday during the Year of Faith. This week’s proposed day of prayer and fasting comes on the eve of a separate worldwide observance, called by Pope Francis, to pray and fast on September 7 for peace in Syria.

In a reflection that accompanies the announcement of the weekly intention, the USCCB calls attention to a pastoral letter on pornography released by Bishop Paul Loverde of Arlington, Virginia, in 2006. In that pastoral letter the bishop wrote: "In my forty years as a priest, I have seen the evil of pornography spread like a plague throughout our culture."

Has the USCCB even ever considered going back to weekly Friday abstinence on a permanent basis, reestablishing Ember Days, actually making Ascension Thursday a Holy Day of Obligation?

As far as Bishop Loverde and pornography: do an internet search for Loverde; Fr Haley.

Here’s an example:

One scandal received national attention: the case of Fr. James Verrecchia at All Saints in Manassas and his adulterous amour with parishioner Nancy Lambert. Fr. James Haley was a parochial vicar at the parish and his attempt to help Jim Lambert save his family precipitated the most extreme persecution to date against a priest. Verrecchia was the diocesan golden boy, the bishop’s Master of Ceremonies, and a man on the way up. When Fr. Haley protested to the bishop (Loverde), Verrecchia wasn’t removed, Haley was. Jim Lambert, who begged the diocese to move Fr. Verrecchia, was ignored while the affair went on unimpeded.

Jim Verrecchia wasn’t the only problem for Fr. Haley. He was placed with one homosexual pastor after another from the day he was ordained. Some were flirting with gay pornography; a few had active lovers visiting the rectories. After several trips to see the bishop (Loverde) about these situations, visits which were unwelcome and fruitless, Fr. Haley heard the bishop speak these fateful words, “You have no idea what I can do to you.”

for those who struggle with pornography use

It's no struggle -- indeed, it's hardly even an effort now that we have the Internet.

They might try this... if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion. 1 Corinthians 7:9

Just sayin!
