The Revolution launched a whole program of "dechristianization" within France. Policies taken up by the revolutionary state were radically anti-Christ. For example, they sought to replace the traditional Gregorian calendar with a "Republican Calendar" that got rid of the 7 day week (replacing it with 10 day "decades" and 12 months made up of 3 decades each). They confiscated Church lands and ordered the removal of religious statues, crosses, and any other religious symbols. They attempted to institute new state-sponsored religions, such as the "Cult of Reason" (and when that didn't work so well, a generic "Cult of the Supreme Being"). The revolutionary government required all clergy to swear an oath acknowledging supremacy of the State over the Church in all matters, including doctrine. Failure to do so was punishable by death.
Though the radical policies were modified in 1905, there is still a strict policy of "laïcité", where religious influence is, as a matter of law, supposed to not influence itself in matters of State at all.
