Openly transgender Mormon woman attends priesthood (Mormon)

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 Utah) - A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has recently undergone a big transition and tonight hopes the church will accept her for who she says she is.

Leahnora Isaak was born a man, was ordained in the priesthood, but now wants the church to recognize her as a woman.

“I knew at four years old that I was female,” she said.

Up until last spring, Leahnora was known as Bob, a husband, father and priesthood holder.

“I felt that being Bob I was a cross-dresser I felt that weaning male clothing was the wrong clothing for me,” Leahnora said.

In May, she and her wife divorced and she came from Ohio to Salt Lake City where she marched in the Salt Lake Pride parade and officially became Leah.

“I took off my male clothing and never put it on again, I have never represented as male since that time,” she said.

Now living in Portland, Oregon, Leahnora attends church regularly. She said leaders allow her to attend priesthood meetings as a woman.

I certainly don't support this type of behavior, but it is interesting to see the change among the LDS view. How long until they start condoning gay marriage in the temple?

And for those who say they won't, giving blacks the priesthood started the same way.

Yes, I feel like I am really a multi-billionaire. I felt it when I was 3 years old. Without billions and billions of dollars, I feel like a cross-classer. I truly belong in the very highest economic class, and I demand that I be put there and treated as such.

I am what I thought I was!

I’m not surprised. LDS’s whole history has been one of constantly rewriting their scriptures to be less bizarre and less objectionable.

So LDS caving in to pressure on moral issues to be more acceptable doesn’t surprise me at all.

Didn’t Mormons support the gay scout leader policy?

To summarize the findings on a thread last summer, Mormons are the single largest supporter of the BSA. Every LDS ward in the country sponsors an average of three and and half BSA troops each, more than triple the sponsorships of the second-largest BSA supporter.

When the alleged “burning in the bosom” occurs.

Well all, note this telling comment from the person in question:

I'll highlight the operative words by which Mormons gauge their entire spiritual life -- and yes, it is related to ReformationFan's use of the "burning bosom" phrase:

"“I FELT

that being Bob I was a cross-dresser

I FELT

that weaning male clothing was the wrong clothing for me,”

Mormonism's core center value for supposed discernment of spiritual truth is FEELINGS...pure sentimentalism...

If a Mormon prays to the Mormon god about getting an abortion,
and she FEELS that the Mormon god says "yes"
Lds leaders are on record as saying that one of the many Mormon "grounds" for getting an abortion.

If a non-Mormon prays to the Mormon god about whether the Book of Mormon is so,
and he/she FEELS it is,
then it's follow the yellow brick road to Salt Lake City.

If this guy FEELS that "wearing male clothing is wrong for" him, then such MORMON FEELINGS dictate it all!

Why this is interesting. I guess...

...ANY Mormon priesthood holders can wear almost anything they want now to priesthood meetings...

...and real church discipline has now slipped off of the radar screen from this normally hierarchically driven 'crackdown' oriented cult

Go to the source: the Church never has supported gay scout leaders. The church will not support as scouts or continuing members those involved in homosexual behavior who do not repent.

However, boys who acknowledge feelings of same sex attraction but who do not commit homosexual acts - and who do not advocate homosexual behavior - are not excluded from scout troops. It is about standards of behavior.

Didn't mention "leaders" in my post...

Interesting tho that you imply policy only includes "boys"

The fact is, you can be an adult -- an 18 yo homosexual Eagle scout -- and be in the Scouts...a policy that the Mormon church supports.

From the article:

I guess this means that if you're a homosexual teen scout in a Mormon church-based BSA troop you can show up to Boy Scout meetings & outings dressed like girl scouts!

Let's properly reword this per the REAL position of the Mormon church on homosexuals in the Boy Scouts:

Boys...

and 18 yo MEN

who acknowledge feelings of same sex attraction
but do not commit homosexual acts
[Well, at least, as far as the Mormon church knows...
...given that 18 yo homosexual men (Eagle scouts)...
...were sleeping in rather close proximity with minors on that last outing...]
...and who do not OPENLY advocate homosexual behavior...
...are not excluded from sleeping in close quarters with vulnerable minors on outings...
It is, after all, "about standards of behavior"...
...But ya know, boys will be boys;
...and some homosexual men (18 yo homosexual Eagle scouts)...
...will be homosexual men!

There are, unfortunately, some who, in their youth experience confusion in their feelings about attraction/same gender attraction, but who remain chaste and do not act on their confused feelings, acting instead on faith in Christ.

Such young men may best be helped through a period of maturation and growth, and clarification about their feelings until they settle on solid, heterosexual orientation, marriage, etc.

This approach is, in my view and in the Church's view, better than ostracizing and rejecting such people automatically when they first acknowledge feelings of same gender attraction and confusion.

I personally know people who have been helped through this process and have achieved this happy outcome. I also know others who have failed to school their feelings, have rejected God's teachings on morality, and have followed the path into the homosexual lifestyle. Those who were helped by the Church's approach were worth the patience and effort.

No, they don't. With all respect, "troop" means a Boy Scout unit. Different BSA units have different names. LDS wards are required to sponsor a Cub Scout Pack, a Boy Scout Troop (it's the official Young Men's program for the CoJCoLDS), and a Venturing Crew. Some LDS wards, I believe, also sponsor a Varsity Scout team.

Also, bear in mind that there are units and there are youth. The Methodist Church has the most Cub Scouts and Venturing Scouts. LDS has more Boy Scout troops than the Methodist Church - but Methodist Boy Scout troops average 25 Boy Scouts per troop while LDS Boy Scout troops average 10 Boy Scouts per troop.

Let's pose a hypothetical...

Let's say there's a rural area where there's just not enough scouts for a critical mass. And so a "mixed-sex" scouts is proposed. [This occurs, btw, in rural areas all over the country when it comes to school athletic teams]

And some are in favor of such a special BSA new "rural" policy, and others aren't. And then, even many open to the idea of not wanting to "ostracize" females...still raise some concerns: After all, they say, mixed scouts is great for local meetings...but what about sleepover outings? Especially since the "let's don't ostracize" crowd doesn't want to separate the females at night time or shower time lest they FEEL ostracized (there we go to the critical center of Mormonism -- Sentimentalism).

And so during these discussions, we hear the following rationalization:

There are, unfortunately, some who, in their youth experience compulsion in their FEELINGS about attraction/other gender attraction, but who remain chaste and do not act on their confused feelings, acting instead on faith in Christ.

Such young men -- and women -- may best be helped through a period of maturation and growth, and clarification about their FEELINGS until they settle on solid, heterosexual marital focus, etc.

This approach is, in my view and in the Church's view, better than ostracizing and rejecting such people automatically when they first acknowledge feelings of other gender attraction and compulsion.

I personally know people who have been helped through this process and have achieved this happy outcome. I also know others who have failed to school their FEELINGS, have rejected God's teachings on morality, and have followed the path into the promiscuous lifestyle. Those who were helped by the Church's approach were worth the patience and effort.

****************

There ya go, JTT...all the italicized words above are your own. I simply changed "same" to "other" -- "confusion" to "compulsion" and "homosexual" to "promiscuous"...and the rest is your rationalizations based upon the almighty arbiter of truth in Mormonism -- FEELINGS (burning bosoms, etc.)

Well, ya better believe burning bosoms are gonna be operative on mixed-sex scouting outings where they are sleeping in the same quarters and/or tents and showering together!

You see, we're not only talking about local meetings. We're talking about sleepover events where the sleeping accommodations can be rather tight at times. We're talking about accommodations where there's group showers.

And, so, would you use the above rationalizations to excuse boys & girls taking showers together on mixed-sex scouting weekends?

Remember...the VERY basis of this thread article is an LDS priesthood holder who considers himself female. And you somehow think it's "healthy" for such a person who deems himself "female" to openly shower with boys? And be snug sleeping bag vs. sleeping bag. Really?

"Didn’t Mormons support the gay scout leader policy?

Not that I'm aware of, but they were key in recent decision by National to revise the membership standards policy for youth.

The National president is a mormon and he went to SLC to petition the mormons directly to get their blessing/approval for the change. They gave it to him.

In years past, just the mere threat of the mormons leaving BSA was enough to get National to back down.

The BSA needs/loves mormon scouting because mormon scouting is a "hollow force", they register (pay) for every member who is of scouting age that is on their membership rolls, whether they are active or not.

So the BSA gets the money, but doesn't have to invest it in the program properly because they can redistribute it elsewhere.

Required, you say?

Indeed.

Most Christian churches have "youth groups" -- with youth group leaders.

In contrast, Mormonism's multiple-front approach for teens includes:

(a) "Seminary classes" in the wee a.m. hours
(b) Boy Scouts (& Cub Scouts for younger group)
(c) For girls, it's their Young Women's group (ages 12 & up)

So, they essentially treat Boy Scouts as their male youth group substitute...

Try Sections 3.1, 4.1, and 4.2 of the [LDS] Scouting Handbook for Church Units in the United States.

"LDS Scouting Handbook"

You should also consider Sections 8.13.4 and 11.5.3 of Handbook 2 (Administering the Church).

Yes, each ward is required to have those Scouting programs.
