I was in the capital city of Tatarstan (Ashgabot) a couple of years ago and I was amazed at how many Christian churches were there.

You may be thinking of Turkmenistan, one of the republics of the former Soviet Union and now an independent nation?

Tartarstan is a province of Russia and Kazan is its main metropolis. It's about 500 miles east of Moscow (roughly).

Turkmenistan is a fascinating place, though. Ashgabot looks so new and clean that it appears artifical.
