I'm sure many FReepers will blow $10 on something useless over the holidays. Why not use that money to support the message that Christ is Emmanuel - God with us?
This is a personal peeve of mine. Ever read the Lord's Prayer in context with the verses before it? Matthew 6:7-13
"But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen."
poorly worded, my mistake . just saying that many people want God to be a vending machine. I pray = God better do what I want
It’s the “vain” part, not the “repetitions” part that Our Lord was admonishing against. Otherwise, Psalm 136 would not be in the Bible, because the phrase “for His mercy endureth forever” is repeated 27 times - as the second half of each verse.
Not to be in the least, attempting "corrective", but as shortcut to how I understand it, and what it was you were seeking to convey, if the words;
had been underlined also, that could relate nicely with what else was underlined.
Meaning...we might be much on the same page?
..Though it's ok, too, I'll dare to venture, to recite the prayer as a re-instructive reminder to ourselves as to the manner we should pray, possibly leaving all as well when that prayer be corporately recited, as whichever concerns be then present within individuals, can possibly then be better led to being made subject to the provisions, as to what manner those concerns be best framed within an individual seeking to approach the throne.
It's about what our posture before Him is best, to put it more simply. (?)
This OT believer agrees. I will go see this.
Shalom.
