I would say that the 'conveniently forget' observation you make is partly premised in your being indoctrinated somewhat by the moral relative arguments used by those promoting the homosexual agenda by arguing that it is just another sin. HOWEVER, premise and context are quite important.
As to PREMISE, Government is not in the business of either promoting or condemning sin nor salvation. Legitimately, government protects people & property as well as promoting social order & the common good. It is only when sin meets the limited criteria that government operates authoritatively within that government legitimately acts; for example, the case of murder. Government never did promote marriage because it was promoting love or for that matter opposing the sins of fornication or adultery. It was always about social order (raising children) & the common good (creating children)
As to CONTEXT, as an example, when was the last time you heard of an adultery or fornication parade? When has any legislation promoting equality for adulterers been proposed? What about marriage equality for bigamists?
ONLY sins that are actions (NOT feelings or thoughts) can be judged & discriminated against by others and out of that group there are but a few that limited government can legitimately act upon. However, the homosexual agenda is premised falsely upon propaganda that actions and a state of being are one and the same thing and that discriminating against an activity is tantamount to discriminating against a member of a minority known as the 'gay species'. The terms 'homophobia' and 'gay' come form the same place 'climate change' and 'global warming' come from - delusional thought & fabricated propaganda. as a result of the leftist push 'forward' what we see today is a government illegitimately acting to supposedly legislate against the sin of 'hate' or as the left has coined it 'homophobia' (AKA legitimate discrimination against homosexual activity) while at the same time the government illegitimately promotes 'love' as a basis for 'homosexual marriage'.
