Eureka, California (CNN) -- Police had a man who is suspected of killing a Catholic priest in his California rectory, but they let him go.
It was mere hours before the slaying of the Rev. Eric Freed that an odd-acting Gary Lee Bullock had been in custody for public intoxication. On New Year's Eve, Humboldt County sheriff's deputies had responded to reports that a person was "acting strangely" and arrested Bullock, taking him to jail. But Bullock, police said, was "rejected" from the facility "due to his erratic behavior."
Bullock, 43, was then moved to a nearby hospital, "where he became more agitated and had to be physically restrained by deputies," police said. Bullock was eventually booked into a jail shortly after 4:30 p.m. on New Year's Eve, staying there for more than eight hours. He was released at 12:43 a.m. on January 1.

Wasn't there a case - in the last year or so - of a fellow being beaten to death by California police, and the reason for this action was basically that he looked at them funny? The officer who administered the beating took the time to put on plastic gloves before getting down to business, presumably to protect himself from splashing body fluids. He also had the courtesy to tell the victim that he was about to receive a severe beating, in the spirit of "open government," I guess.
And this guy goes ape, requires multiple personnel to bring him down, gets put in the can for a whole eight hours, and then gets released?
I'm missing something, obviously.

Releasing someone who appears to be mentally disturbed, violent and homeless in the middle of the night in the middle of winter strikes me as reckless, stupid and cruel. Had they kept him till morning, there wouldn't be a murdered priest.

Some people wanted to make jokes about this story very early on.
Others thought that to be in poor taste.
Not sure how it played out.
That’s what I remember too.
Very poor taste. Early on I said the thread was “toxic” due to unfounded and scurrilous allegations against this priest, and the facts now bear it out.
