If the Pope objects to "smarmy," "unctuous" priests, why has he recently placed greater trust in Cardinal Donald Wuerl? I guess he doesn't object to smarmy, unctuous Cardinals.

The translator seems a little pleased with himself. The obvious translation of unctuouso is "oily"; it makes a sort of pun with "anointed."
