Daddy issues. More specifically, his Dad was a stern,Irish-Catholic who seemed to be a Jansenist. I suffered under a bit of Jansenism myself and it can make things difficult at times. I think Maher said his Dad eventually left the Church. A fear-ridden, excessively guilt-ridden Catholicism or Christianity eventually collapses upon those who practice it. So many atheist tyrants hated their fathers. I highly recommend the book “Faith Of The Fatherless” by Paul Vitz.
