St. Valentine was a priest in the early church. The Romans had a feast called Saturnalia where the menfolk would sacrifice dogs and skin them, then the womenfolk would strip off and line up to be whipped with said dog skins (or something like that). St. Valentine was against this sort of thing, and said so. As a result, he was beaten to death with rocks and then had his head chopped off.
Romantic, eh? Not really. St. Valentine, pray for us.
