A jihadist group in Syria has demanded that Christians in the northern city of Raqqa pay a levy in gold and accept curbs on their faith, or face death.
The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) said it would give Christian residents "protection" if they agreed to the list of conditions.
The announcement came in a statement posted online.
Correspondents say ISIS is trying to implement an extreme interpretation of Islamic law in areas it controls.
Raqqa, seized by ISIS last year, was the first provincial capital to be completely in the hands of rebels.
'Risking the sword'
The directive from ISIS, citing the Islamic concept of "dhimma", requires Christians in the city to pay tax of around half an ounce (14g) of pure gold in exchange for their safety.
It says Christians must not make renovations to churches, display crosses or other religious symbols outside churches, ring church bells or pray in public.
Christians must not carry arms, and must follow other rules imposed by ISIS (also known as ISIL) on their daily lives.

As I read your prayer, I was gripped by the feeling that the God of Compassion is not going to let the pervasive insanity and sin that afflicts his people here on earth continue much longer.
That it commands others to pay them gold, tells you all you need to know. They don’t own the land, provide services, etc.. This is slavery, pure and simple.
Christians are being slaughtered all over, crickets from the WH. From the ‘christian’ president. /s But i’m sure if I go to a local Black baptist, AME or other church they’ll have an excuse for him. ‘Oh he’s working behind the scenes’, yeah... giving them weapons to do it; ‘He doesn’t run the country by himself, it’s those republicans fault’, yeah, but Bush did... right?
Even those who have no faith should see this as evil, not making sense, supernatural or at least crazy.
Strange that those who care so much for animals and environment, applaud less humans as long as they feel they’re not in danger. You would think they would say it’s horrible... (at least on the scale of that cross on the military cemetery, those horrid Boy Scouts, that creche which burns their eyes or the baking couple that wouldn’t bake the gay couples cake), yet many on the left wave their banners for them. Is it cowardice or the ‘trendy’ thing to do... to hate your own? It has to be self-hate and the loathing of any authority whatsoever... until they find themselves under the foot of Islam. They don’t know whom they serve.
