Health Care Sharing Ministries: A Little Known Exception to Obamacare

A health care sharing ministry is not the same as health insurance—instead, it is a form of cost sharing. The names and medical and financial needs of ministry members are published in a monthly newsletter. Members typically pay a monthly fee (also called a “share”) directly to other members whose needs are listed in the newsletter. They also agree to send cards and letters and pray for ill fellow members. According to the Alliance for Health Care Sharing Ministries, participants share more than $180 million per year for each other’s medical expenses.

This is actually similar to what the early new Christians did: cared for each other and met the needs of one another. Ministry in action!

Indeed. And that is the model that the health care sharing ministry that I’m a member of uses. It’s been a blessing to my family for the past two years.

That’s great, but for a ministry to qualify it has to be in continual operation since 12/31/1999, which would be more than a decade before the effective date of Obamacare. How is that fair?

There are three ministries that meet the language in the ACA. As far as fairness is concerned, that went out the door when the government thought it’d be a good idea to force Christians to pay for abortions. The provision in the ACA, as limited as it is, still allows for Christians to protect their religious liberties and values. I have, and will continue to utilize this solution.
