That Niederauer was ever an archbishop, and that he continued to be one even one day more, let alone five years more until reaching voluntary/mandatory retirement age, puts the lie to the current archbishop's statement that "Church teaching on the matter “has been very clear and consistent from literally the very beginning."
There is a much more conservative bishop.
