You know what was probably the main thing that drove me out of the church? Being scolded by the church in my thirties for believing things that the church taught me when I was growing up, while claiming that church teaching has never changed. I've always wondered how the RCC could go from a church that burned people at the stake over minor doctrinal disagreements to the condition it is in today; yet Catholics will state with a straight face that the teachings have never changed.

My sentiments exactly. The Catholic Church is unrecognizable from what it was pre-VII, never mind in the Middle Ages.
