Jeeze, islamic clerics get to change islamic law on their own whim, when they feel like it, when it suits their personal wants? Sounds a lot like what... never mind.

One can consciously appear to be religious as a cover for more nefarious purposes. Jim Jones comes to mind on the "Christian" side and you can pick any muslim in power to represent the Islamic side. To the other point, one can be genuinely be religious and totally miss the hypocrisy in their life (I have some experience in this area) ref. Matthew 7:22.
A lot of this has to do with my personal definition of "religious" which is generally 'going through the motions of the faith'. I've had someone say to me "I know you're religious....." and I just cringe because I think somehow I've made a poor witness. I would much rather hear "I know you're a Christian....".
Its not all bad though, because we can then talk about the difference between be just religious and being Christian.
