In the U.S., the bishops insisted on picking their own successors. This process was so obviously corrupt that Archbishop Pio Laghi, the Apostolic Delegate to the U.S. in the 70s and 80s (IIRC) wrote an exposé of the practice. Cardinal Joseph Bernardin was able to fill the U.S. episcopacy with many of his homosexual cronies. Bernardin, fortunately for the Church, has been dead for about 20 years.

The problem with the Catholic Church is Catholics bashing her instead of trying to correct what they “perceive” as wrong. With Catholic-bashers, finding fault with any and all things Catholic, protestants have a friend on their side.
I stand up for the Church and do not constantly bash other Catholics, especially the clergy. We need more Michael Voris’, who rightfully criticises the clergy when he thinks they are leading the flock astray. But he certainly does not make a habit of cutting down the majority of the Popes since Vatican II.
