Contending for the Faith and the Genesis Mandate

by James J. S. Johnson, J.D., Th.D. *

Believers are commanded to share the gospel, but they sometimes face political obstacles when they try to “earnestly contend for the faith.”1

For example, in the early 1800s missionary William Carey, the Father of Modern Missions, began evangelizing India’s prodigious population. But despite heroic efforts, his work was frustrated by colonial politics. British colonial policy forbade introducing any activity that disturbed local customs, and his translating of the Holy Bible into Hindi was already aggravating some indigenous customs. Carey’s Great Commission work was being derailed in the name of social stability.

One local Hindu convention was the horrid practice of burning widows alive—after they had been drugged and immobilized—on their husbands’ funeral pyres. This widow-killing (sati) was an unquenchable grief to William Carey and his friends, as was his frustration year after year at failing to effectively evangelize Hindu Indians.

I really don’t care about this subject. What I care about is making it central to the Christian Faith. If faith is a target, and Jesus is the bulls eye, then the interpretation of Genesis isn’t even on the same wall.

If it matters to you how Jesus interpreted Genesis ... then I would say your assertion "missed the mark."

Ok, your attitude means we must split. That’s a pity.

Can I mention something (bear in mind I don’t keep track of who has said what to me in past replies and posts...)

About Genesis: Look at how the Mormons speak and teach, for example.... They are VERY good at twisting New Testament word definitions in order to confuse Christians.

Then look at how they interpret Genesis ——

They screw it up completely and say things like “Adam fell upward...” (incomprehensible).

Also, Earlier in this thread, someone posted that how Jesus interprets Genesis is important.

Amen times three to that.

The Messiah of Israel is the living oracles...The Word that became flesh..

Before Mathew, Mark, Luke and John- He is Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. I hope believers don’t ignore Torah but it would explain a lot of what the churches deal with today and why there are so many denominations..

And as far as the genesis mandate, my understanding is it is a restoring of our true purpose in life- Fellowship with our Heavenly Father..
Adam lost it. Messiah restores it for us.

Repent and believe gospel Messiah preached is not the same as the believe and receive gospel that tickles the ears and it tends to change the priorities of a believer..

Believers who believe our purpose in life is to gain better food, better clothing and better shelter are no different than the other secular humanists or even atheists who think ‘all about me, all about here, all about now’..

Our purpose is to have fellowship with our Heavenly Father and a son’s inheritance.
Adam lost it. Messiah restores it.

It is because of Genesis and the eternal separation from our true purposes, we needed Messiah Joshua to come to make all things new..

Now, go and live like you are a Son of God and sin no more..
The victory is won..It is finished..The inheritance begins today...on the earth inside you, today...

Amen, and Christ very clearly taught Genesis, starting in chapter 1:

Mar 10:6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
Mar 10:7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
Mar 10:8 And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
Mar 10:9 What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

And Genesis 6-9:

Luk 17:26 And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.
Luk 17:27 They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.

And the everlasting, eternal Gospel the angel will preach during the Great Tribulation, also invokes Genesis 1:

Rev 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
Rev 14:7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
