Long Standing? ...For 1,965 of those years, EVERY Christian denomination has unequivocally regarded Homosexual activity as a sin. ...for 1,900 years every Christian Denomination considered artificial contraception to be a sin....the Protestant Reformation is only 600 years old, a mear blip...

But for liberals, history begins with their own birth. And having to work incrementally through issues with patience, instead of throwing tantrums and calling for hostile revolutions? Just not in their skill set.

Who is the implacable foe?

That would be Satan. The gay lobby is just one of the latest manifestations of his powers on earth.

Well put.

The UMC also has its own Book of Discipline that contains UMC law and policy. The lefties just cannot accept the idea of "settled law" for any issues other than a handful, such as "global warming" and "born that way."

The General Conference meets once every four years (same years as US Presidential elections) and has become increasingly dominated by UM's from Africa who are, unsurprisingly, much more conservative, Biblically grounded, and theologically orthodox than their North American counterparts.

Now that's interesting; I haven't been following General Conferences of late (meaning the last 15 years or so :> ). FWIW, it was the African bishops in the early 1980s who blocked allowing missionaries to Japan, which was the beginning of the long trek away from the UMC for me.

This has put the liberals from North America into a tailspin.

It's a delicious irony, isn't it?

Many Methodist churches are very conservative. Mostly smaller ones in smaller town. No doubt a split is coming.

"So how do "Spirit-filled believers" know that they are on the right track? Does the Holy Spirit TELL them so?"

Some of what Luther called the "enthusiasts" are essentially monotheists of the Third Person of the Most Holy Trinity; but most of the enthusiasts are idolaters of the Zeitgeist (the spirit of the age).

Why did African bishops oppose sending missionaries to Japan?

Seems that way to me too. I mean it isn’t that hard for a conservative nonMethodist Christian to figure out who gets to define the term ‘Methodist’ for them.

If you think the lib Methodists are the ones who you should be letting define the term, you are doing it wrong. I mean come on, it’s not that difficult.

Do they, the “Spirit-filled believers,” NEVER get it even SLIGHTLY wrong? Do they, the “Spirit-filled believers,” ALWAYS get it right?

Perhaps I didn’t explain myself correctly. A person should always make sure that relgious literature, sermon, or doctrine lines up with the Bible. Many who attend churches where heretical teaching is being taught have no clue about what they hear because they don’t read the Bible.

As you know Catholic and Protestant Churches have problems with pastors, priests, etc. who have strayed from the truth.

Reading the Bible with an open mind and without a commentary, allows the Scripture to speak for itself. Try it.

As for the others you mention, God has fashioned the heart of every person to know there is a Creator. We all are accountable to Him.

I don't know a whole lot about the history of Methodism, though I do sing a lot of old Methodist hymns by Charles Wesley and find them very Christ-centered and edifying.

I am aware that the Religious Coalition for Abortion Rights (what they call their hellbent selves now, I don't know) was for decades housed in the United Methodist building in Washington, DC.

I hate to see any denomination suffer strife and splits, but on the other hand --- as in my own Catholicism --- I think a certain number of excommunications would supply profoundly needed "teachable moments."

Why did African bishops oppose sending missionaries to Japan?

I got the story third-hand, but I was told it was because Japan was a rich country and Africa had poor countries, so Japan didn't need missionaries. The problem with that argument, if that was the argument, was that the Japanese college I would have taught for was paying my salary, and all it wanted was the imprimatur on me of the UMC.

“Mainstream” U.S. Methodists have been dominated by its Liberals since at least the 1960s but among their brethren have been enough “old fashioned” Christian Methodists - who never have accepted moves away from traditional Christian views on sexual morality - to keep COMPLETE moves away from those traditions from becoming Methodist Church policy.

Apparently the Conservative brethren among the Methodists see no chance of pretending the division between them and the Liberals - that has persisted for a long time - can be mended. It was always that the Liberals would either force the Conservatives to accept their view or force them to leave. I guess they will, before too much longer, formally leave, not just in the dribs and drabs they have done for years.

Your logic is very sweet but full of holes. MANY problems arise from SELF learning of the Bible. There are many things that I, an older Catholic, still find puzzling.

Reading the Bible with an open mind and without a commentary, allows the Scripture to speak for itself. Try it.

Sorry but your commentary is absurd. Your assumption that Scripture speaks for itself goes against all logic. Jesus Himself was "rabbi," TEACHER. We DO have to be taught how to interpret the Bible.

That is why the Protestant "Spirit-filled believers" have wrought over 30,000 plus DIFFERENT Protestant denominations, not founded until 1500 years AFTER the birth and death of Our Lord. Do you REALLY believe THAT is how Our Lord wanted His words to be remembered??

There is still ONE Roman Catholic Church founded in 33 A.D. Even the first Orthodoxies didn't come into being until the ninth century.

Clearly you have not internalized the article.

The point is there are pastors protesting.

I see.

By the way, if you want to make ITALICS, you use the < > for that, NOT the [ ] -- Zeitgeist.
