On Thursday, EWTN Global Catholic Network announced it has begun construction on a television studio on the West Coast, located on the campus of the Diocese of Orange's Christ Cathedral.
“As we transform the Christ Cathedral campus into a dynamic and inspirational center of Catholic worship and outreach, we are blessed to partner with EWTN to share our community’s energy and faithful witness with the world,” Bishop Kevin Vann of Orange said July 24 at the Napa Institute.
“EWTN’s partnership will profoundly benefit our Church, enabling us to share the love of Christ with millions across the world in multiple languages from the Cathedral campus, here in Orange County.”
The new studio is expected to be operational by the end of 2014, transmitting news and Masses across the world.

"World Youth Day [1993] was the turning point for the network and for Mother," [EWTN producer] Chris Harrington opined. In that short half hour in Denver, Angelica had summoned an orthodox crusade, challenging those who felt disenfranchised and confused by the continuing changes within the Church to stand firm and to cede no further ground. The official response to Mother's outburst was swift. During a phone call on August 15, the president of the National Conference Bishops, Archbishop William Keeler, told Mother she had "overreacted." Days later he would urge EWTN to shelve the editorial and suspend reruns so as not to fan the flames of controversy. But the flames had already been fanned.
In a blistering editorial, Archbishop Rembert Weakland wrote that the "senseless and heartless condemning of one another" had to stop. He then proceeded to condemn Mother Angelica's "vitriolic" commentary: "For a half hour she ranted and raved about all the abuses since Vatican II, according to her own personal judgment which, of course, she equates with that of the Holy Father," Weakland wrote. "It was one of the most disgraceful, un-Christian, offensive, and divisive diatribes I have ever heard."
"He didn't think a woman playing Jesus was offensive," Mother said of Weakland's criticism. "He can go put his head in the back toilet as far as I am concerned." (pp. 243-244)
Though [Father Robert Bonnot, an official with the U.S. bishops' conference] didn't recollect the exact nature of the conversation, he told me, "If her stance was being selective about which bishops could be allowed to speak, I am quite confident that our stance and policy was: We see the bishops as entrusted with leadership in the Church and no bishop on principle should be excluded."
As the phone call continued, Mother Angelica got "louder and louder," according to her sisters. One by one, the nuns gravitated into the hall, listening to the conversation as if awaiting the final twist of a radio drama. Though Mother respected the office of the bishops, she could not bring herself in good conscience to relinquish her network to individuals or ideas opposed to the Magisterium — bishops or no.
"And who are you to decide which bishop should be aired?" Father Bonnot asked.
"I happen to own the network," Angelica responded curtly.
"Well, you won't always be there."
"I'll blow the damn thing up before you get your hands on it," Angelica shouted, as if speaking to the deaf. "I've chosen my Magisterium; you choose yours!" Slamming down the receiver, to the delight of her nuns, she terminated the conversation. (p. 211)
I'd say the network has "evolved" over the years, particularly since Mother retired.
The thing that has evolved is the Diocese of Orange. They have a new conservative bishop who was unfortunately saddled with the Crystal Cathedral and is doing his best to make it, as it says in the article, a place for Catholic worship.
I think having EWTN there will help.
I still can’t believe they bought that architectural eyesore.
A great book. It got me through a family reunion. You know how those can sometimes go.
The late Philip Johnson’s fingerprints are on lots of (glass-and-steel) buildings, regardless of whether we like them. It is good if one or more of them can now serve a higher purpose.
I pray that will prove true. I didn’t know of a conservative priest that could come out of California.
But, the very same was said of a man from Nazareth. :)
EWTN brought me to the Church. I am concerned for and indebted to Mother’s masterpiece.
She had the support of a bishop named John Paul II. He liked her.
It doesn’t offend these eyes. Can’t say the same about the thing in LA. By the way, Vann is a great guy.
And we loved him so..Pope John Paul II. I greatly admire Mother Angelica, and so enjoy her appearances on EWTN. She soothes my soul...a very good woman,and so immensely dedicated.

Well at least the old crystal cathredral will become a Catholic place of worship.
On EWTN shows conversion to the Faith is discussed entirely in terms of a “fullness” or “closer spiritual walk with Jesus” than people already have in Protestantism, and never in terms of conversion being a matter of spiritual life and death for the members of Protestant and schismatic “churches.” The Catholic Church is presented as the Cadillac of religions, while the others are still perfectly serviceable Buicks or Fords. And a number of EWTN “experts,” including Fr. Benedict Groeschel, openly declare essentially that the practitioners of all religions — all “good people,” really — are saved. The Church is presented as desirable, but not necessary for salvation. The sacraments are presented as promoting a spiritual “fullness,” but not as the means of salvation — directly contrary to the anathema of Trent. As Trent specifically declared in an infallible manner: let anyone who says the Sacraments instituted by Our Lord merely nourish Faith, but are not necessary for salvation, be anathema — that is accursed and expelled from the Church. But the Faith promoted by EWTN disregards every anathema of the Church concerning the objective necessity of membership in the Church for salvation. That is the ecumenical mindset. "I mean, seriously, Christians were actually giving money to keep this channel on the air! It was unbelievable."
