We have a contemporary band at our church with some good singers but after years of listening to it I just can’t get into it. Sometimes I drive to church late just so I can miss the opening songs.

And that's a fundamental problem in so many places. If you think about music.... nobody can stand to listen to the same artist / band / musician ALL of the time. We have to have variety. A successful church with a band has to incorporate a number of people. It has to include the whole church and find opportunities for all of the people to play and participate. Young and old, extremely talented and marginally. It can't be the same 4 guys with the one girl singing harmony every sunday. NOBODY is that good.

But telling others what Christ has done for us as individuals, our personal witness, our own story and testimony of redemption is exactly what we are supposed to do, because our personal witness is the most powerful. That is what Amazing Grace does. It’s powerful because it is personal. It exalts the transforming power of Christ, not man.

Nevertheless it has anti Catholic references in it.

I prefer the hymns I grew up with like HHH or Just As I Am or Tenderly Calling or BITS or ROA

But I nearing 60 and attend a large SBC church in suburban Nashville where its mostly young families....like us....my kids are 6-25 but the parents are Xers and Ys

Not boomers like Wifey and I but they like this Praise music and having a band and given where we are the talent for the band and the singing is off the scale

I will confess that during the most acute phase of Praise singing you can feel the Holy Spirit

No question

So it leaves me ambivalent truly.

Bottomline is that almost anything within reason helps the lost be found works for me.

I used to be sort of militant old school...my wife softened me but she always cries with the old stuff....reminds her of her long gone mommy.

Not being Catholic, I wouldn’t know, but it seems to me that would be true of many hymns written by Protestants.

Catholicism can be an effective tool in bringing people to God. God is my faith. The Church belongs to Him. It is not above Him.

Cumbersome Musically!!!!????

I see these praise and worship bands with the leaders singing songs in such a high tenor and with such a hard to follow beat that hardly anyone can sing them comfortably. They think everyone should be his or her own Christian rock star and are blind to the what the regular church goers can really comfortably sing....roughly in a range from about 60 hz to 400hz if male or 120hz to 880hz if female. They all seem love f sharp major or f sharp minor, keys of d and G as well singing songs written in a narrow range near the tops of their tessituras
so that no one can find a comfortable octave range to sing in without constantly switching to a lower octave and back to the original octave just to stay in tune! For some who can instinctively harmonize in the older hymn styles, forget about doing it with these newer songs!

If God had meant Christians to sing like individual rock stars, he would have given us all built in telescoping fender guitars!

“If they use their skill set for anything except Christian songs we decide that fame means more to them then following God’s word. Some of us need to read the part about the plank in our own eye.”

I love the hymn “At the Cross” especially done my way, hillbilly style. BUT, “And now I am happy all the day.” is not particularly scripture supported. That bothers me. I mention this because it is not just a current problem.

When folks us their skill set to create Christian songs, hymns or poetry for the “Christian” market, they should make every effort to check the lyrics against scripture. Or they might just want to not be included in the “Christian music” genre.

The article is spot on about twisting Christianity into something it is not. There is toxic misinformation, or indoctrination going on there, whether it be unintentional or deliberate.

Personally, I can't stand the worship songs that repeat the same word or phrase ad naseum. It creeps me out (with good reason, in my opinion).

Matt. 6:7 "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."

Acts 26:1 - Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself:

2 - I think myself happy, king Agrippa, because I shall answer for myself this day before thee touching all the things whereof I am accused of the Jews:

3 - Especially because I know thee to be expert in all customs and questions which are among the Jews: wherefore I beseech thee to hear me patiently.

4 - My manner of life from my youth, which was at the first among mine own nation at Jerusalem, know all the Jews;

5 - Which knew me from the beginning, if they would testify, that after the most straitest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.

6 - And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers:

7 - Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews.

8 - Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?

9 - I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

10 - Which thing I also did in Jerusalem: and many of the saints did I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I gave my voice against them.

11 - And I punished them oft in every synagogue, and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even unto strange cities.

12 - Whereupon as I went to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,

13 - At midday, O king, I saw in the way a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, shining round about me and them which journeyed with me.

14 - And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

15 - And I said, Who art thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest.

16 - But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee;

17 - Delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, unto whom now I send thee,

18 - To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me.

19 - Whereupon, O king Agrippa, I was not disobedient unto the heavenly vision:

20 - But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

21 - For these causes the Jews caught me in the temple, and went about to kill me.

22 - Having therefore obtained help of God, I continue unto this day, witnessing both to small and great, saying none other things than those which the prophets and Moses did say should come:

23 - That Christ should suffer, and that he should be the first that should rise from the dead, and should shew light unto the people, and to the Gentiles.

I, I, I, I, I, my, my, mine, me, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, my, I, I, I, I, me, me, I, me, I, I, me, me, I, plus 3 thous, 5 thees, and a thy addressed to him.

Wow, that Paul guy sure was self-centered, wasn't he?

Methinks you likely would not sing an Anglican hymn period

I am definitely an old-fashioned guy having been a classical singer for 25 years and sung the oratorios, masses and anthems of the great composers, but I listen to a lot of CCM on the radio. There are great and uplifting artists and songs out there that provide an alternative to hymns and gospel quartets.

Anyone who has the brains to actually give CCM a chance should listen to Third Day, Casting Crowns, Jeremy Camp, Matthew West, Mercy Me and some of the other top CCM artists. Their music is heartfelt, Bible-based and well produced.

I have also heard foolish people on Christian radio exclaiming that anything with a beat is satanic and that rock and roll is of the devil. This is blatant nonsense from the extremely narrow-minded. Most of the artists I named put the Gospel right at the heart of their songs. Also, one of the instruments the Bible suggests we use in worship is the timbrel - a drum.
