Skip to 5:00 for Brantly’s portion of the presser; he speaks for more than seven minutes but the key bit, in which he describes coming down with Ebola, comes in the first three minutes. I didn’t know what to expect when I heard he’d be released but I’m surprised regardless at how fully he seems to have recovered. According to his own timeline, it’s been slightly less than a month between the moment he began to feel unwell and today’s triumphant reemergence. I’m curious to know how he thinks he contracted the disease in the first place. He mentions taking precautions in treating patients in Africa but doesn’t say how he thinks the slip-up happened.
As for how he got well, it may have been that experimental serum that cured him — but it probably wasn’t:
They were the first human beings to receive an experimental drug called ZMapp. But they are not the first people to have recovered from Ebola, and good hospital care is likely more responsible for their recovery than any mysterious “serum,” as the charities they work for termed it…

Here’s Brantly, clearly a gracious man and just as clearly devout. Too much so to mention that there were plenty of people, some of them famous, who didn’t want him brought back to the U.S. and treated. It took guts for the Emory medical staff to care for him knowing the risk. There’s a reason he’s so effusive in thanking them.

I THINK you mean Hanuman, the monkey god, a Hindu god, who was an ardent devotee of Rama according to the Hindu legends.

Lol. I taught yoga for 27 years and had to learn some of the Hindu stuff on SOME of their 330 MILLION deities. Absurd.
I liked the monkey god because it reminded me of some people I was acquainted with. Heehee.

Good Lord, the doctor is a Christian missionary member of Samaritan's Purse, the Evangelical Christian organization headed by Franklin Graham.
His life is dedicated to serving Christ and spreading his message.
Years ago I read a short article in Scientific American where Cholera which killed many traveling pioneers can readily be cured by what are essentially water enemas.
You taught Yoga for 27 years? That’s very interesting.
I don’t wish to hijack the thread, but, I had a big argument with a fellow Christian who insisted that Yoga was merely an exercise program, and had nothing to do with either Hindu Philosophy or Religion.
And yet, you had to learn about 330 Million gods and goddesses in order to teach it.
What is your opinion about that?
(My opinion was that, just as Tai-Chi uses Taoist Principles in harmony with the specific movements, Yoga is inseparable from its Hindu roots. Was I out of line?)

On DAY one of my class, reiterated on my syllabus, I stated my philosophy and goal.
Yoga is a system of:
1. stretching
2. strengthening
3. breathing
4. relaxing.
I added that I would, as best I could, relate the long history of yoga as an expression of some aspects of the Hindu faith.
I also stated that, for our purposes, it was not going to have anything to do with faith or beliefs beyond "cultural information."

If you had asked my about yoga and its Hindu roots, as an INDIAN or a Hindu, I would have added that SOME parts of Hinduism are inseparable from yoga; some aren't.
Yoga was a WAY to worship the gods by SOME Hindus, but DEFINITELY not by all.
The Hindus have their own practices by Indian REGIONS, by AREAS, by STATES, by TOWNS, by VILLAGES, by EXTENDED FAMILIES, by SMALL FAMILY UNITS and by INDIVIDUALS.
In other words: anything goes. And that is the truth.
Hindu gods are males, females, animals, invented/mythical creatures, objects and combinations of the above...IMPOSSIBLE to define in any way.
[My husband was POSITIVE that somewhere in India someone was worshiping a '56 Chevy.]
Yoga was just one, small, esoteric way for SOME Hindus to worship one/some/any/all/some of their favorite deities.

Also on DAY ONE I told all my students that I was, am and will always be a practicing Catholic. I taught yoga because it was so good for the mind and body (NOT THE SOUL, as far as I was concerned).
My students' VERY FAVORITE activity was when, every four weeks, I would take them on a "trip" to a far away desert island, in the warm south Pacific, with soft tropical breezes, the sun beating down on the hot sand, feeling that hot sand under their thick, soft blanket...smelling the salt of the sea, the occasional whiff of tropical flowers....and so on.
My goal was to relax them...and occasionally a student would either fall asleep or drift away and have trouble "getting back to reality."
My husband came to one of those sessions and he LOVED it...and said that I really nailed the experience that he and I had had many times, snorkeling in the tropics.
Ah me, I miss him.

My yoga classes were alway PACKED because "word got around" about my teaching.
I specialized in strengthening backs and lower abs and stretching EVERYWHERE!
Our breathing exercises would be about 10 minutes long, or until I couldn't stop MY OWN YAWNING from being so relaxed. I DID say to the students that an EXCELLENT skill to acquire and hone is to be able to yawn with the mouth closed.
There was a nun in our area who had PERFECTED the experience: she could fall FAST ASLEEP with her eyes WIDE OPEN. Now THAT is a skill that would be wonderful to acquire!
