Speaking to journalists on the return flight from South Korea to Rome last August, Pope Francis answered a question about the Vaticans dialogue with China. He said he prayed when his plane entered Chinese airspace (this was the first time a Pope had flown over China) on the way to South Korea. I went back to my seat and I prayed a lot for that beautiful and noble Chinese people. A wise people. I think of the great Chinese sages, a history of science and knowledge. Also we Jesuits have a history there, also Father (Matteo) Ricci. Do I want to go to China? Of course: tomorrow! Oh, yes. We respect the Chinese people; it is just that the Church seeks freedom for her mission, for her work; no other condition.

I’m assuming this will be in modernized hanzi for the mainland Han Chinese, rather than the traditional hanzi for the Taiwanese. It’s a good move, of course.
