On Sunday, Pope Francis spoke about the Christian season of lent, the period of prayer and penance leading up to Holy Week and Easter. “Lent,” said the Pope, “is a time of combat” and “a time of spiritual battle against the spirit of evil.”

Darn right Pope; especially since ISIS is in Libya and has threatened the Vatican as well as the Pope’s life.

This reminded me of one of the points C.S. Lewis made in Mere Christianity, that as Christians in this world (not of it) we are soldiers operating behind enemy lines during a time of war. That imagery has always stuck in my mind, to be surrounded and constantly vigilant in an environment dominated by an enemy.

Anymore whenever I read a quote from the Pope I hold my breath waiting for the "What the....?" part and the inevitable "blame the translator" statement issued by the Vatican the next day.
Refreshingly, this isn't one of those times.

This is really a very true statement. Lent kinda crept up on me this year. I wasn’t prepared for it. It’s really a time not about oneself but of emulating Christ, which is next to impossible.
Still, each morning is a struggle, a fight to contain your inner peace from the temptations of the flesh. This year so far is proving to be much more difficult in year’s past.
Don’t know why.
